Mk2 Power Steering

Postby 78Mk2 » Fri Dec 09, 2011 11:34 pm

Did any Mk2 model vans ever have the option of power steering?

Could the power steering equipment out of a pinto engined Mk3 model be fitted to a phase 1 Mk2 van?

What other parts would be required to fit power steering to a non-power steering model Mk2? Could a Mk3 power steering rack be fitted to a Mk2 model?

you wont find a mk3 power steering box as theyre rare and sell for a lot.....

i want to fit power steering to my mk1 but i need the box type as rack cant be fitted on mine

i think its easier if you have a pinto engine..no sure weather rack can be fitted apposed to box :?:

Do you if it can be easily adapted from a MK2 Granada ? I've just bought the Granny with a 2.0 Pinto engine and I was thinking about using the power steering for my MK2 Transit.

Actually I thought about this the other day, but I think you could though it may not be easiest route. The hardest part is finding a suitable sliding column joint that will take car of the up/down and any sideways movement. You would have to have one made. Otherwise I cant see any reason why it can't work. You can get flexible hoses for the power fluid.
Years ago my short oval stock car used a beam axle with a Escort rack attached to it. That used a specially machined slider for the column. Every one pooh poohed the idea until they realised that actually it was a lot lighter than a box set up (and the car won races) and did away with various bits of linkage . All it used was two welded mounts on the beam to locate the rack on. As long as its mounted in the correct position for your ackerman geomtry, dont see why you cant do it on a Transit.

These people do them for VW's, so its very possible. http://www.ultimate-engineering.co.uk/p ... ering.html

The money you'd pay for a proper Transit power set up if you can find one, plus the time and effort of fitting it, I think electric is the way forward. Not only that in the unlikely hood of it packing up, at least it just reverts back to useable heavy steering. Try doing that with a fluid power steered vehicle.

So, what are all the parts that would be required to fit power steering out of a Mk3 into a Mk2?
