Tip: removing viscocoupling+fan

Postby taneven » Thu Oct 26, 2006 6:35 pm

Hello all,
I heart that it could be a problem to remove the visco-coupling with fan before changing the timing belt. As a result I didn't remove the fan before changing the timing belt, and it proved to be a challenge to exchange the timing belt in this situation.
Since I wanted to know what my visco coupling was like (there is a play of a few mils in the axial direction) I used the following trick to loosen the viscocoupling nut. As you mat know it has a righthand tread, so loosening has to be done against the clock direction.
- Put a 10 mm flat ringspanner on one of the fandrivepully bolts, making sure it is in roughly a 2 o'clock position.
- turn the engine anti clockwise by hand until the spanner runs against the crankshaft pully. The fandrive pully is now mechanically locked
- us a (adjustable) spanner to loosen the viscocouplingnut. As the fanpully is locked as the backside of the ringspanner is now tight against the nut, there is no torq force left on the fandrivepullyfixingbolt (I like the word!) self and as a result the viscocouplingnut can be loosened with a considerable torq. No slamming, just unscrewing. Mine was the first time in 3 years to be loosened and it seems the material is inoxidable.

If only I had known this in advance, I would have removed the fan before changing the timing belt. This worked fine for me, it may be a tip for you!

My Dutch is pretty rusty but I reckon it says......
Unfortunately it is 5 words written wrongly, without spaces but it sounds beautiful.
I got a little black book with me poems in

Spot on Rover!! only joking with Taneven, credit where credits due, not badly written at all for a non native english speaker. After all the dutch do believe they have one of the MOST difficult languages in the world, which is absolute crap, in fact it's very simple and regular grammatically. It's only difficult not to spit all over the person your talking to.

Shaking things up

Postby taneven » Thu Oct 26, 2006 8:58 pm

I already thought this word would shake things up a little, that's why I wrote it in the first place. The funny thing is that the reactions are not about the content but concentrated on one word.... :?

It's no revalation you've made about getting the viscous fan off, any way it's not about one word but five put together, it's englishnotdutch. I love that word. One thing you need to know about Brits, we are all Kidneys (we all take the p*ss) nothing personal. Contact the adminstrator and get him to put it in the How to section :P

i've got a proper viscous fan spanner, bought it about 20 years ago from an autojumble for 50p and its still doing fine. :D

gets used on every car i buy that has a viscous fan as the first job i always do is take it off and throw it in the bin and fit an electric one.

i always use a lock spanner on a pulley bolts, have snapped a couple off though so be warned if your fandrivepulleyfixingbolt is exceptionally tight.

Ooo!
Post us up a pic of that spannery type item please Mr Popuptoaster sir.
Then I could make a copy. :D
But I'll also try the 10mm spanner solution too as soon as I can get back to the old broken down wagon.

This is a viscous fan spanner, basically just a very thin 32mm spanner.

Right shape? Does it need to be a different shape then? I've always managed to get a normal spanner on it ok.
