EGR Valve

Postby bigfella1952 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 10:51 am

I have a 2007 Ford Transit, having done only 80,000 miles.

The Engine Management Light is permanently on.

The main dealer has reset it and tells me the EGR valve wants replacing again. It remained off for approx 2 weeks and then lit up again.

This is the 5th time it has needed replacing.

This seems a common fault, and really frustating and expensive.

The vehicle is serviced twice a year at approx 7,500 miles, never been treated badly, and 99% time, me the only driver.

Any suggestions or help gratefully received.

The newer EGR's are alot more reliable.

Maybe remove your MAP sensor and give that a good clean as they do get "coked" up..

Unplug the egr and forget it.It will cause the light to stay on but at least you will never have to pay for another EGR

Isn't the EML an MOT failure now?

It amazes me that no one's made a plug in that will fool the ecu into thinking that the egr is plugged in and working. Having said that, I haven't had a new valve on the current van.

Has it ever had a PCM update with any of the replacement valves? The later update improves the valve reliability

The Eml light isn't an mot failure, its just the rest of the warning lights..... But they dont fail the mot test until the 1st April, its only an advisory at the moment.

Thanks for all the advice. :) :D

Great site this.

I was advised to try different fuels. :?

Tried BP, Esso, Shell, no change although tends to run better on BP for some reason.

I filled up with Total Diesel, after running for about 10 mins, the EGR valve warning light went out. It comes on as normal with all other warning lights when ignition initially turned on, but goes out as soon as engine running.

Lets see how long it stays out now, fingers crossed.

(these things make you thinK, so commplicated, should renew me AA memebrship)

Thanks again

Paul

Sounds strange but try DPF cleaner......one shot in the tank and job done for a bit.

My EGR kept showing a fault as stuck open but one of the RAC guys i know suggested giving it ago and it seems to work happily. MPG seems to have gone up slightly too so i think it might have given the engine a little clean out too

Hi guys, first time poster here.

Just to try and reignite this thread rather than starting a new one. Got quoted £500+ from my local ford van dealer today to replace the EGR valve because its apparently integrated in to the manifold as well so cant just replace that one part. My van is a 56 plate tdci.

Did a bit of research on options, one is obviously to replace the whole lot as per dealer say so and try and get something second hand or cheaper on ebay, another clean it out but sounds like a faff but could get a non dealer to do this for cheaper perhaps (dealer told me it couldnt be cleaned out as it was a sealed unit or something, from what I've read this sounds incorrect?).

Engine warning light is still on now.

Seen this which would stop the clog occuring again but wont solve the immediate problem:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EGR-valve-bla ... 19cff19e8a

Basically on unfamiliar territory with all this stuff so would appreciate any advice.

Cheers

Vantuner can now disable egr valve in the ecu so the light stays off :D
