engine making noise at higher revs

Postby mccririck » Fri Mar 09, 2012 9:21 pm

My Transit Connect has started making a moaning noise above 2000 revs. I started noticing it yesterday. It is 4 years old and has done about 51k miles. I thought it might be the turbo but it is a moan rather than a whine. Reminds me a bit of the noise buses make. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Hi and Welcome....

Someone will be along soon, can you describe the noise a little better, driving conditions, does it do it at idle?

Mine has a little whistle at about 2250rpm on accelerate and decelerate, ever since I changed the exhaust system!

No it only becomes noticeable above 2000 revs. It does it in any gear and out of gear.

Can you explain further?..what happens if you clutch down?

How would you explain the moan... And where about from the bay does it sound like its coming from... If you can make it make the noise whilst stationary have a friend identify the area it's coming from

Hi just found this forum looking for advise with the exact same problem. So hi! At 2000revs in any gear I get a noise like the old school bus, sounds like it's coming from passenger side, but after 2200rev sound goes, if it is out of gear I dont get any noise rev fine. Could it be a gear box issue? Mine has done 97k and the gear box is a bit of a soup bowl, 1st, 3rd and 5th are anyone's quess to find at times. Any ideas?

Well that's not the exact same problem because mine just gets worse with more revs and I get it out of gear too.

I'm wondering if it may be a crack in the manifold or a dodgy exhaust.

It was the alternator.
