Torque settings for wheel nuts?

Postby Eggski » Mon Mar 12, 2012 10:37 pm

What should they be on a Mk5 190 6 stud? Apart from bloody tight!!

A mate of mine said not to over tighten them as you can warp the rear drums, so I thought I better ask.

My air wrench has settings of 220Nm, 260Nm, 290Nm and 310Nm, or should I just do the old way of standing on a bar!

I give mine some copper grease and do them tight with a ratchet and then give them 30-40 degrees with a 2' bar or until they are tight, don't go crazy like standing and jumping on the bar. 183Nm? is sod all really with a bar. Just do them all equally and keep an eye on the nuts for a couple of weeks or so. I hate air wrenched six stud nuts, they always break the breaker bar when trying to get the off a couple of years later.

They will drive on three wheels though I've been told so I wouldn't worry too much...

The farmer down the road had both his twin wheels on one side come off down the A road 7 miles away loaded with hops. I keep finding wheel nuts up the road.. Anyway he was OK and it drove so good on three (four) wheels down the straight he didn't notice and had to backtrack for 250 odd yards to find the wheels in the hedge.

I think its just another MK5 rugged design trait.

I nearly had that happen after it went to have some new tyres, couple of weeks later one side slackened off and I could feel something wasnt right, stopped to check and all six on the one side were only still on by a couple of turns, really elongated the wheel nut holeson the wheels and knackared the studs!

Im sure 21st and a size 14 boot will be ok to tighten them up!

Yeah, that is why I hate air tools and garages. Kids just turn the impact wrench up to max and job's a good 'en.

You should see the 1/2" drive extensions I have from Halfords I used for the rear wheels. They twisted 120 degrees end to end, like a spiral. Never usually go to Halfrauds as even the cheapest kack on Enay is better quality then their stuff. Took them back to Halfords and said not fit for purpose and they said I applied too much torque, to which I replied that I only used my hands. Its a 1/2" drive 5" extension FFS. Looks like a Dolly Mixture.

Still they did take back a valve spring compressor I got, not the diesel one...ha ha the Di valve springs bend the thing like a banana so it became unusable...and they put it back out on the shelf. FS.

Trick is to hit the cro mol socket with a sledge hammer as you turn them I reckon, saves a few broken bars at least.

The black battery Makitas are the bollocks.. Think they were selling that with a Bhp combi a one stage. Will that get a wheel nut off then...seriously? I know they are good but...seriously?

Oh yes, the one I was using yesterday has done van wheels, tractor wheels, telehandler wheels and pretty much every other bolt thats needed doing, you can get them as bare unit for £140 now.

As I said, I bent my bar trying to get the front nuts off my van on tues, so much that its useless now, couple of seconds with that big makita and they were off.
