Veriable speed wipers General Electrical Module (GEM)

Postby frogsuk » Sun May 13, 2012 11:58 am

Does the Connect have a General Electrical Module (GEM) and if so where is it fitted???

I know that many people have tried to fit the variable speed wiper stalk from other Fords' but have come up against the 9 wires instead of 10 wire problem. The Connect has no wire in the wiper stalk wiring loom at position 1 which on the Fords' that do have variable speed wipers have an addition of a white wire in that place.

I have traced the wiring on my daughter Ford Fusion which has a variable speed wiper stalk to the GEM and found where this white wire goes to.

So...
1. Does the Connect have a GEM and where?
2. Has anyone done this mod AND got it working?
3. Any other ideas as to how to get it to work?
4. Does anyone have a readable picture of the wiring diagram of the Connect (Tourneo 2004-2005) they can PM me with or post on here. (My FordEtis IDS has no wiring diagrams :( ).
5. Does anyone have a readable picture of the wiring diagram of the Ford Fusion (2007) they can PM me with or post on here for reference.

Any help and or ideas with this would be great as once you have driven a vehicle with variable speed wipers, you miss them when you don't have them.

Okay... this is what I have found so far but any help here please yet??? Looks like the 6 speed may be located in the CTM Okay :? Any help at this point??? Where the 6 speed intermittent input may be in the CTM???? Or even where the CTM is????

I'll keep looking.... but in the mean time here is an overview...

Description and Operation

All functions are initiated by means of a multi-function switch which is operated by the wiper lever on the right of the steering column.

Windshield Wipers

The windshield wiper comprises the following components:

Windshield wiper arm (two)
Wiper motor on the air cowl grille
Windshield wiper linkage
Windshield wiper blade (two)
Wiper relay, in the central junction box
Central timer module (CTM), in the CJB
Multi-function switch, comprising
-
wiper switch,
-
washer switch (pressure switch) and
-
intermittent control switch (rotary switch, model-variant dependent)

Wiper functions - windshield

The windshield wiper motor has 2 speeds and a limit switch for the park position. It is controlled by the multi-function switch on the steering column via the windshield wiper relay and the CTM.

After switching on the ignition (position II) the following five wiper functions are available:

Off
Once
Slow
Fast
Intermittent

Wiper lever in the OFF position

If the wiper lever is moved from any other position to the OFF position, then the windshield wiper motor continues to run at slow speed until it reaches the park position, where it stops. This is effected through a second circuit via the limit switch. After the windshield wiper is switched off, it is supplied with voltage through this circuit until the limit switch breaks the circuit to the windshield wiper motor via the windshield wiper relay (normally closed contact) and the multi-function switch.

Wiper lever in the ONCE position

Push the wiper lever downwards and release. It returns automatically to the OFF position. The wiper performs one wipe cycle at a slow speed. The current flows via the multi-function switch to the wiper motor.

Wiper lever in the SLOW position

Push the wiper lever two steps upwards. The wiper operates at a slow speed. The current flows via the multi-function switch to the wiper motor.

Wiper lever in the FAST position

Push the wiper lever three steps upwards. The wiper operates at a fast speed. The current flows via the multi-function switch to the wiper motor.

Wiper lever in the INTERMITTENT position

Push the wiper lever one step upwards. The wiper performs single wiping movements at a slow speed with pauses between them. Depending on the model, the wiping time interval is either set at the fixed setting of 9 seconds or one of six steps can be selected by turning the knob at the end of the wiper lever (position 1 = short interval. Position 6 = long interval).

The multi-function switch transmits a 12 V signal via the normally closed contact of the washer switch to the CTM which periodically activates the wiper relay at intervals of nine seconds or as set by the selected wiper delay interval (depending on trim level). The current flows via the wiper relay (normally open contact) and the multi-function switch to the wiper motor.

Okay.... yet again found a bit more but for Ford Fusion...

It makes mention of a control resistor

Could one be added to the connect??

Windshield wash/wipe system

The windshield wash/wipe system will only operate if the ignition switch is in the position "I" or "II".

Five wash functions are available: "Off", "Single wipe", "Speed 1", "Speed 2" and "Intermittent" or "Automatic wipe" (depending on the vehicle specification).

In "Speed 1" or "Speed 2" mode, the wipers operate continuously at either normal speed or fast speed.

When the intermittent wipe mode is switched on the windshield wipers operate at normal speed with the following wiper delays:
Wiper delay 1: 1 second
Wiper delay 2: 3.5 seconds
Wiper delay 3: 6 seconds
Wiper delay 4: 9,5 seconds
Wiper delay 5: 15.5 seconds
Wiper delay 6: 22 seconds

NOTE: In the event of a failure, or if the control resistor is not connected the default time for the wiper delay is 8 seconds.

When the windshield washer switch is operated washer fluid is sprayed onto the windshield. After a short delay designed to protect the wiper blades the wipers perform 2 or 3 wipes at low speed.

If, when the windshield washer switch is activated, the windshield wipers are switched off, then a single wipe is performed 4 seconds after the wipers have returned to the home position after performing the 2 or 3 wipes.

If, when the windshield washer switch is activated, the wipers are in intermittent mode, and if the selected wiper delay time is longer than 6 seconds, then a single wipe is performed 6 seconds after the wipers have returned to the home position after performing the 2 or 3 wipes. If the selected delay time is less than 6 seconds then no post wipe is required.

The post wipe function on the windshield ensures that any water remaining on the windshield after washing is wiped away. It is only required if the wipers are switched off or they are set to intermittent mode.
