2001 lwb transit fuel problems

Postby hf2379 » Sun May 20, 2012 1:50 pm

I've just bought a 2001 transit lwb, the previous owner had just changed the fuel filter and couldnt get it to start so i've towed it home but still cant get it to start. I've taken the filter off and checked it all, filled it up with diesel and put it back on, cracked 2 injectors and cranked it over for a while and there is fuel coming out. I've also loosened on of the diesel return hoses and cranked it over as well as loosening the bleed valve on the filter housing and manually pumping it, when manually pumping it I was getting some air come out so i did this until it was just diesel closed it up and it still wont fire, so I pumped it again and more air comes out?? Not sure what to do now? Any ideas? Cheers

To bleed the filter i pump the primer a few times then open the bleed then close it, then repeat this till I'm happy no air (treat it like brakes) once that is done i crack the 4 injectors and turn over til diesel comes then close injectors and try, if it doesn't start crack open the furthest injector (pipework) and bleed them individually like that.if it still doesn't start, take off the 2 left pipes of the primer and put them in a bottle of pop full of diesel and bleed injectors it should start, this will tell you if the problem is the tank to filter. if nothing else is wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I tried all that but a different problems come about, I charged the battery all night so that it'd be good for the morning, put the battery in and cranked it over, it sounded good for 10seconds then sounds like the battery is flat, put the battery in a different car and it fired easy. So I have an electrical fault somewhere, I've taken the starter motor off and cleaned and greased the terminals which didn't help. battery is reading 13v on the meter, I also put the meter from the jump lead point in the engine bay and earthed it on the engine and couldn't get a reading?? Is that normal? I tried it with ignition on and off. Thanks

without sounding stupid are you sure there is only 1 battery under the seat? I found 2 in mine but that may only apply to mk7 vans I don't know if mk6 came with 2 so I'll assume there is only 1 in yours but I had the same power problem you described I didn't recharge both batteries!!

If there is only 1 then you need to find out why there isn't enough power/torque getting to the flywheel. I may be tempted to give it a quick nudge if you have bright lights on the dash and no air in the fuel.

A simple test on the battery I find is to turn the key while pushing main beam, if there is a short or if the battery is no good the main beam will go really dim and the clock lights will dim too.(this is not a conclusive test just helps me point in the right direction) a conclusive test on the battery wil be a drop test at say ATS or fast fit place they'll tell you if it no good.

Thanks for the reply. Forgot to say I put the voltmeter on the battery and it's 13v but dropped to 8v when turning the engine over. I also go a friend to tow the van about for a while last night, I did this first with all the injectors cracked (diesel everywhere) and tightened them up and tried again, still failed to start. I then cracked 1 injector and watched whilst the engine was cranked over and there was still air coming out, I think the filter housing may be broken because I can move the plastic ring around the filter a little and also move the filter about a bit, which I presume could let air into the diesel system?

You should put the left 2 pipes in a pop bottle full of diesel,i had all the same symptoms,i had to replace the filter housing.

Thanks for the reply. I've just put a new filter housing on and bled the system a number of times and theres no air anymore but it still won't fire, it hasn't even sounded like it was going to fire once, no coughs nor smoke coming from exhaust. If there was air in the system it would still try and fire wouldn't it?? Im wondering if there is an electrical fault somewhere maybe? At a total loss with this one!

Ok so my mk6 was a duratorq di and when i rebuilt it i had the glow plug short which burnt the live wire out (which i fixed later) but i was still driving it in winter with no glow plugs, couldn't tell the difference! The point being that you need compression, heat and fuel to run the engine,i never had heat without the heater plugs so i only had fuel and compression.
So assuming you have a di you obviously need to check those.
Did you spray anything into the filter to see if it wanted to run?
If you are sure there is fuel getting to the cylinders, then timing may need checking.it should at last have spluttered along the way giving you hope, but if you haven't heard a peep, you need to start inspecting things further.

You said diesel pumps out of the cracked injector pipes? Can you check its getting passed them?

Cheers for the reply. Don't think mine is a duratorq, perhaps a 2.4 Tddi?? it doesnt say duratorq anywhere. I've replaced the starter and it's now turning over nicely. I've sprayed some easy start in and it fires and runs on easy start but won't run without it. Definately getting fuel to the injectors but for some reason there is no white smoke coming from the exhaust, nothing at all coming from the exhaust which I don't understand. Could it be an immobiliser issue? If it has an immobiliser? But if it did have one would it not stop diesel at the pump? And I could be wrong but if it was a timing problem it would still fire white smoke out? Cheers

If you still have the plastic cover on top of the engine it's will say duratorque di but I'll assume it is missing.
On the di i think the injectors have a different setup from tdci, you could look on your logbook or Ford etis website for your engine type.

If it is running smooth on easy start i would assume the engine setup is ok but that leaves the fuel pump, you need to find out if you have the right fuel pressure at the injectors and the pump is timed ok.

Does it run only a short while i.e to burn off the easy start? Or longer?
If it doesn't even try to start off the fuel pump that's where i would focus, I'd also check everything else is ok like hoses etc.

I think only electronic fuel pumps have a shut off switch but double check this for yo)ur model (i'd say no)

Is the engine turning over quite fast when you turn the key?
I think it's a good sign it runs nice off easy start because that would suggest you don't have a duff engine

I think ppl do say never tow start a diesel, because of that i wouldn't tell some 1 to (i may give it a nudge myself)
I would think it wouldn't run very well if the timing was out as the whole lot is on the chain, unless it's possible to knock the fuel pump out and not the crank or camshafts??

If it is running nicely with easy start then a few more checks with the fueling is needed in my opinion

There are a few threads here on fuel pump solenoids etc which may be of interest, but the fact he has absolutely nothing in terms of coughing and spluttering sounds like a blockage or something to me.

I thought Id whip the timing cover off just to check it all but have come across another problem. When I disconnected the radiator hoses, water started leaking from the bottom of the bell housing??? I'd noticed some drips there before but didn't think much of it

If there was water leaking from the bell it would surely come out without needing to take rad pipes off?
I can only think of core plugs but it still doesn't make sense are you sure the water isn't leaking down from the back of the engine?

In any case I'd probably do a strip down if things are emerging.
Did you get the cover of and check the pump?
