Automatic Transmission - labouring?

Postby MrsGrey » Mon May 21, 2012 2:27 pm

Hello I am new here. I'm thinking of buying a motorhome, based on Transit 100 Td Lwb Auto. It's S reg. 1999. Turbo-diesel with a filter for the emission zone. It has the expected rust on wheel arches and sills, but has only done 24,700 miles. My question is this: when I drove it, it seemed to my ear to be making a lot of noise in the low gears, but not pulling as well as you would expect from the amount of labour, perhaps. If it had been a manual, it sounded a bit as though the clutch was slipping. It went fine once it had changed to the higher gears, which seemed delayed.
Now, plainly this is not an F1 racing car, but I'm not used to this kind of engine/gearbox, though I drive an automatic car.. Is this what you would expect, or should I be wary? I can get an inspection with a test drive but I wonder if they could tell without dismantling it...

Can you kind expert Transit people help at all, in a general way? e.g "They always sound like that" or " Sounds dodgy"....!

Many thanks,
Jinny

Motor homes tend to be quite heavy, so as long as the transmission oil is a nice cherry red (and not brown and smelling burnt out) I would say this is quite normal :)

If the transmission oil is brown and smells burnt, walk away or allow £1000 for a replacement :!:

Ford Transit 120 TDI EPIC Automatic. 0-60 in a leisurely and smooth 12.7 seconds and 1/4 mile in 19.1 seconds. Now where's all these faster? manual Di s?
