2.4 350 LWB. MK6. Changing fuel filter questions...

Postby Mr Blue » Thu May 31, 2012 12:16 am

Hi all,

I have searched but with no clear answer.

I have a 2005 2.4 350 LWB (mk6) transit and I want to replace the fuel filter as I don't think it has been changed.

Question: Would I need to bleed the injectors when I do this?

How much is the filter from Ford and what do I look out for?

Thanks in advance

Blue :)

There's loads on this mate, they are about 15-25 from Ford, there are about 5 or 6 different ones for tdci and di which ever one should correspond with your vin number, and 2 types of fitment.you will either have a direct screw on filter or a filter that it's held on with a plastic screw on sleeve.
The 2 types i found were the screw on filter was for my non primer pump filter housing, and sleeve type for the primer pump type, you can tell which 1 it will have a button on top.
If you carefully tale off the filter and fool the new 1 full of diesel and replace, it shouldn't need the injectors doing if you have the pump and you bleed it. The non pumping 1 may need bleeding but not necessarily

thanks for that. It is the 'di'

Another question:
Is this supposed to be full of diesel? Does the mark look ok?
With the engine running it drops lower.

Give me a petrol engine and im fine but i'm new to these Transits

I wouldn't worry about that i don't think mine has ever been full,if you change the filter and press reset on it that's pretty much it, if you have the filter primer housing you can bleed any air out before you start the van, i personally have never had any problems changing the filter, just fill it with diesel put it on, press the primer button a few times then while holding it down open the bleed screw then close it then repeat that a few times till no air is present then press reset then start the van up. If it runs then cuts out and won't start then you still have air somewhere and will need to crack the injectors etc

I was wary about changing my fuel filter after hearing stories about having to tow vans and bleed injectors but after reading a few posts on hear and following the instructions i had no problems. Just make sure filter is filled to top and keep tapping it to make sure that there is no air trapped in the filter. Start the van and hold revs at 2000rpm for a few minutes, this will get get any air out of the system. Hope this helps.

Lol the housing that has the pump button on top should have a yellow screw on the front, its the bleed, the housing with no pump button doesn't have 1 :D

I find it helps to do it after engine has been running and is still hot!

Finaly got around changing the filter. filled it with diesel, pressed the reset button,

Fired for a few seconds then died. Battery went flat on trying to start it and guess its got air in the system.

Cracked off the 10mm bleeders and no diesel comes out fo them.

Do you have to keep cranking the engine till diesel squirts out because my battery gives up.

Take filter, off fill with fuel, refit, jump leads to another vehicle, crank for 30 secs, if no joy, remove filter, refill with fuel, refit, crank for 30 secs and repeat till she starts, when she starts hold revs at 2000 for at least one minute.

Do not under any circumstances be tempted to bump or tow start.

Thank you for the responce. Yes I read up on bump starting and I have written a warning in the cabin for everyone else to see.

I did put my industrial mains jump pack on and it did struggle to start due to the air. Also cracked off the 10mm bleeders.

There was air in the system. Took off the filter, filled more diesel, took off the intake pipe and squirted some easy start untill it fired (not reccomended i know)

Held the revs to 2000 rpm and all is good.

Now starts on the first turn of the key. My previous filter was a pattern one (previous owner) and took 2-3 attempts to start.

:D

if you'd crack the 19mm injector feed pipes on top instead of the leak off's (10mm) on the side you would have done it a lot easier
