Engine keeps cutting out

Postby albertrose » Tue Jul 31, 2012 11:22 pm

Hi I wondered if someone could shed some light on a problem I'm having with my 57 plate transit, firstly I think that I've got a problem with the digital mileage display, in my old 57 plate transit when I filled the tank it read approx 530 miles till empty, in my new 57 plate it only reads approx 450 miles till empty, should this not be reading about the same?? Secondly, the main problem is that on the old transit the fuel warning light came on when the display read 50 miles left, but in my new transit it doesn't come on until about 40 miles left but like today it started to splutter and was conking out reading 70 miles left, I pulled in to the nearest petrol station and put £20 worth in which is all I had, but driving after this the van kept on cutting out when ever I slowed down to an idle or stop, would this suggest that the digital display is not working properly and I'm letting the fuel run to low ans there has been some crap through the fuel filter?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Brian.

Sounds like it wants a fuel filter, and the miles to zero is based on the vehicles historic performance, if you drive it more gently than the last driver it will increases over time

I had that when I brought my van, it was at 330 miles to the tank, until I changed the batteries, then it shot up to 550 miles to the tank, even though I have done a lot of work to it since

How easy is it to change the fuel filter, where will I find it, how much should I expect to pay or it? Is there anywhere online that will show me a diagram regarding a filter change?

I've taken the fuel filter off and drained it from the bottom as I was told that there could be water in the fuel, there didn't seem to be no evidence of any so put back on, there's also a note in the engine bay that the last time it was changed was 2010, it has still cut out a few times today when stationary and idling, but starts up with no prob straight away!!! Any ideas??

Thanks for everyone's help, have now replaced the fuel filter at a cost of £15, for those that don't know how to do it, really easy to do, just twisted of old one, filled up new with new diesel and screwed back on, haven't had any problems and van not cutting out now, fingers crossed that is the end of it.

It wasnt low on fuel.Ive had a few mk7's and they ALL have run past Zero although when you get down to the last few miles the van will start PRETENDING to run out. This is built in and even when you know its not the real thing its still worrying :)

The till empty reading will go up once the average mpg goes up provided you drive it so it does.
