Transit MK6 VXT75 gear box oil recommendation

Postby toricky » Mon Sep 24, 2012 3:29 pm

Hi Brothers

I want to change gear box oil for Transit MK6 running VXT75 gear box, any substitution for Ford stuff (97SX M2C200AA) as it cost 22 lbs per litre in HK. I search the web found the Kroon Oil Transmission Oil SP 1021 meet the Ford Standard. Any suggestion. Thanks.

A good quality 75w90 oil,

Easily avaliable here from any motor parts store.

I use comma oil because its what my motor factor sells, but there are hundreds of brands out there

Thank you. Are you using COMMA MT75 in your MK6 VXT75 gear box? However the COMMA MT 75 spec. is ESD-M2C186-A. Is it compatible with M2C200-C-75W-90?

I am using comma MT75 oil in my Mk5 gearbox! I don't have a mk6.

MT75 oil is the wrong thing to use. If you were to use comma you would want comma SX75w90

SX75W90 got 2 version GL4 and GL5. Which one suite the VXT75 gear box? Thanks.

It appears that this is the correct one, not SX

I think GL4 and GL5 just refer's to the 'quality' IE GL5 is better, applies to any oils, I thinks!

Don't risk putting GL5 in a GL4 specification gearbox, GL5 contains more corrosive additives WHICH WILL ATTACK BUSHINGS.

Gear oil

Gear oil is a lubricant made specifically for transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery. It is of a higher viscosity to better protect the gears and usually is associated with a strong sulfur smell. The high viscosity ensures transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train. This is necessary since the devices needing this heavy oil do not have pumps for transferring the oil with only a portion of the lowermost gears bathed in an oil sump. This heavy oil can create viscous drag leading to inefficiencies in vehicle operation. Some modern automatic transaxles (integrated transmission and differential) do not use a heavy oil at all but lubricate with the lower viscosity hydraulic fluid, which is available at pressure within the automatic transmission.
Most lubricants for manual gearboxes and differentials are hypoid gear oils. These contain extreme pressure (EP) additives and antiwear additives to cope with the sliding action of hypoid bevel gears.
It is extremely important to note that EP additives which contain phosphorous/sulfurous compounds are corrosive to yellow metals such as the copper and/or brass used in bushings and synchronizers; the GL1 class of gear oils does not contain any EP additives and thus finds use in applications which contain parts made of yellow metals.
GL-5 is not necessarily backward-compatible in synchro-mesh transmissions which are designed for a GL-4 oil: GL-5 has a lower coefficient of friction due to the higher concentration of EP additives over GL-4, and thus synchros can not engage as effectively. Also, transmissions which explicitly call for GL-4 oil may have been designed around this lower concentration of EP additives and thus may contain yellow metal parts which GL-5 will corrode.

With regards modern GL-4/5 spec oil which is what dbvm is probably talking about, the type that meets the specification of both GL-4 and GL-5 such as the readily available here in the UK Carlube EP75W90 GL-4/5 semi-synthetic , here is a statement from Carlube about it's suitability in a GL-4 application,

"It is possible to meet both these specifications with the same fluid. There was a time when the higher level of extreme pressure additives required for API GL-5 would cause problems in transmissions requiring API GL-4. But as driveline additive technology has developed it has been possible to overcome these limitations.

Typically a GL-5 lubricant will have twice the level of extreme pressure additives in comparison to a lubricant that meets just GL-4. But as the technology is not harmful to the transmissions requiring GL-4 fluid then it is possible to have a product which is suitable for both applications. Obviously it is not the most economic way of meeting the GL-4 specification but there are no performance issues."

Inter rect sting....... I once flushed my MT-75's Granada and filled with 7w5w90 synth, the gear changes were a lot smoother, but with a little added gearbox noise... probably all the white metal melting LOL

HA
GL-5 is certainly going to work well in a diff, funny enough i was down the factors today and in discussion with a long standing counter dude i get on with(rare 8) ) discussed this whole concept and came away with 9 liters of the Carlube 75w90ep semi synth for £26inc. ie. for 2x4.5L £13 a piece, so will stick some in the amby diff and box which has lived on castrol 80/90ep dino for aeons, if i don't like the shifting then i'll put the old stuff back in!
Got 5L of blue concentrate a/f for winterising the overdue coolant change too, Blue Star stuff? seemed cheap enough for a tenner.
