Reconditioned engine

Postby pictishpunkgirl » Wed Dec 13, 2006 12:37 pm

Does have any idea of a good place to get a good replacement , or reconditioned engine for my transit, it has given up the ghost good and proper, it is a 1994 non turbo 2.5 diesel I am looking for. Mike

Quite honestly I wouldn't bother with a recon, specially diesel cos of the prices. Ask around for a good scrappie, diesels generally have a good long life. If possible see the engine running, check for smoke and ease of starting.

I believe any 2.5di engine up to 1999 will fit, is that right?

Yes it is, we have a 1998 in one of our Mk2s, it's one of the last cable operated pump models.

Did the same recently, fancied a recon but went second hand ~ £500 fitted with 3 month warranty, belt replaced and oil & filters. The garage took it away and brought it back. A 98-99 engine into a 94 van.
A radiator hose sprung a leak, then the back of the alternator leaked. The garage fixed 'em up no problems (Stockton Van Centre).

The throttle cable was replaced soon after as a plastic bit had snapped and the bottom timing belt cover was missing which the garage told me was my old one as the 'new' engine didn't have one. Sorted these jobs meself.
Keep an eye on the oil and water for a while just in case and you should be ok.
With hindsight I'm happy with the cheaper option, the motor runs fine and we even took it to Germany with no problems soon after.
With a recon you just get the block so more work and cost involved.

This one is cheap enough right now, not sure if the location is viable for you though?

Thanks all - the engine looks good but a bit far away. There's one nearby for £200 but the garage are going to tell us whether they think the rest of the van is sound enough to warrant spending the money. Head gasket went, oil spayed everywhere, it overheated, smoke filled the van for 30 minutes then it died (sob!).

pictishpunkgirl, if it's a Di not newgen/smiley I would say get the head gasket done, probably for less than the cost of another engine and fitting. At least get somebody to get the head off and have a look. If the pistons and bores look OK take it from there.

We have lost 2 smilies (98 ish) to head gasket/split hoses, yet have had 2 Di head gaskets done with no internal problems. After the first smiley went we were relyably informed they don't like the heat. Both later engines had bore and/or piston damage. Both Dis are still running.

Fred,

It had been using oil for a while (granted there was a leak), run it almost dry of oil a couple of times and we drove it like the clappers for 45 minutes  when it was obviously chaffed - would that not have damaged the piston/bores, warped it etc? I think I should be called a transit abuser to be honest - I do feel bad about it!
