power upgrade??? just done it.

looking to upgrade my luton.

in my ignorance i just thought all mods were a plug in module.

today i`ve been to a car show in bristol. there was a guy whos taking out the ecu and remapping it.

when asked whats the difference to this methoid and a plug in unit.

he says his way is better. on his computer, he can see how the engine proforms, flat spots etc and give it the correct fuel increase in the areas it needs etc. end result a better, smoother engine.

why as a plug and play unit, is an increase bassed on a generic engine, not yours....

of course he would say his way is better, thats what hes selling. a down side is he needs the car/van for a day, or at least the ecu unit... which means no van for a few days.


what is everyones opion on this methoid?
has anyone gone down this route rather than a plug and play unit?

no need to remove the ECU it can be flashed in situ - blue fin remaps through the 16 pin OBD socket - or you can buy tuning boxes that plug into the fuel pressure sensor or pump (depending whether you're common rail or not)

Theres a lot more to tuning than adjusting the fueling - so i'd say for out & out max power the remap would win easily - cant beat a plug in tuning box for convenience though and they can often add a good chunk. Bluefin sounds good but at £500 its a lot to pay for a generic solution - a remap on a good day would be £300 i guess

I had an "ecotune" box from diesel bob (£375) & it added shed loads of torque & little else - my clutch lasted about 50 miles..

Amongst other things a custom remap adjusts "torque limiters" that vary with each gear so you would potentially have a much better overall increase plus you can tell the guy what you want & where you want it & he can map it accordingly ..

there were a couple of chippers there

the first one only did burgers and chips.....


the other chipped ( modified the ecu) while you waited.

plugged the laptop into the port under the steering wheel, 5 mins later, he had finished.

upgraded to approx 150bhp. (125 to start with)

Can i tell....... no.

he did say the fuel pump had to slowly rise to the correct pressure, this could take 2 miles or 200.

i`ve just done 100 miles coming back from the show, still no " bolt of lightening" sudden power serge.

we`ll see later.

ps. it cost £200. .. not bad for 5 mins work.

Not heard of that one ! If it turns well £200 is good value though - what was the geysers name / trading name ? did you see what equipment / interface was used ?

we were at the GTI international, they were doing golfs all day long.

seemed pro enough, can`t see much when the geezers standing in the door way.

golfs might be easy, i know a ford technician and he says he cant upgrade the power and he has the proper ford laptop, he says bluefin is the only way, £200 lesson learnt

Ive heard of Jason of Chipped UK & from what ive seen he has excellent reputation - & pushes this support / customer service thing heavily .. i contacted him about buying tuning equipment last year..

If it actually was him or one of his agents / dealers i'd say he's either telling the truth, or made an error , or the ecu has reset itself ( last ones unlikeley ) either way im sure he will fix it - if you dont have any luck PM me your number & i'll contact him for you & make him aware of the problem .. -
