This is how to fit a cosworth engine into a transit van
Hopefully this guide will help out anyone wanting to fit a 24v cosworth engine into a Transit, and why not? 200bhp from an engine that can be found in a £300 car......... go grab a granny while you still can.
Ive just done this conversion to my mk1, i'll go through all the problems i had doing the job and how i over came them, if you need any more help or advice go to http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=13 and ask there! I'll also use information ive had got other forum members to complete this guide so it applies to all transits up to 2000.
The Donor
The engine comes from the Granada Scorpio Cosworth 1991 - 1995 the engine is known as a BOA it is derived from the earlier 2.8 and later 2.9 cologne engine - as fitted in capri's, sierra's granada's and some Transits -we'll come to that later! The later post 1995 engines are refered to as the BOB, they are fitted in the 'frog eye' scorpios, they can be fitted but have a more complecated wiring loom and overcoming the pats is difficult so for this guide i'll concentrait on the BOA engines!
The main difference in the normal 12v V6 2.9 engine and the 24v engine is the heads, the block is almost identical so for this normal 12v V6 parts can be used.
The big question - Before you start your conversion the 1st thing you need to ask is ........
Do you want to go Auto or Manual ?
in my opinion auto would be the easier way, the box used in the granada is the A4LDe box - which is also used in the mk3 to mk5 transits, so the longer transit sized gear stick is available and so is the propshaft. The down side is auto's are not everyones cup of tea.
If you want to go manual, as i did then you have 2 main boxes to choose from, the earlier type 9 box, which is generally regarded as weak and not up to the job and the MT75 a box introduced in 1989 and used up to 2000 fairly robust but admitedly on the limits with a cosworth V6 so make sure its a good one!! chances are if you own a 1989-2000 transit then it will allready have an MT75 in it, the other box thats a possiblity is the cosworth T5 - never fitted in a transit as standard but it has been done, its the strongest box and good enough for the job. In my conversion which im using as a base for this guide i used the MT75.

ok so assuming you have an MT75 box in place and you've removed the engine that was attached to it how do you bolt the V6 to the MT75? answer is to use an adapter plate, now as mentioned earlier transits came with V6 cologne engines fitted, so ideally you could get hold of an adapterplate from one of those, most of them were SVO ambilances, police vans, but you do see a few minibusses with V6's in too. If you have chance of getting the bits of a V6 transit take:-
-
adapter plate
-
flywheel
-
clutch
-
startermotor
-
both engine mounts
-
oil cooler
If you can find a V6 transit to get the bits of don't worry, there is another way round. The 2.0 petrol transits fitted with a pinto engine used an adapterplate
heres a pic of the engine mount ->
i made this as a one off :-)
