mk7 timing chain went bang

Postby marchyboy » Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:25 pm

hi guys just joined the forum and need some advise i have a mk7 2.4tdci 6 speed and had it booked in the garage to have the single mass clutch converted when it ent into the garage it was running fine by the way it has 117000 miles on with full service history, anyway when i came to pick it up they advised me it had a small timing chain rattle at the top end now it never had that when i brought it in and whe i drove it home the engine even sounded different, anyway while at work the next day it broke down on the motorway got it towed back to the garage they have looked at it and so far 2 rockers have snapped they suspect the timing chain has jumped, my question is can replacing the clutch cause this they have assured me they are not at fault as they never even lifted the bonnet to change the clutch it is just a coinidense they have told me, it seems strange as never had a noise before it went in and ran horrible when i drove it home can timing chains just get loose like that im completely baffled any help would be great

Im thinking your problem could be caused by turning the engine in wrong direction when loosening flywheel bolts, the camchain doesnt like this one bit,it can let it jump.

I`d say the garage has done something wrong and are trying to cover their tracks (as suggested already), especially if it sounded different next time you drove it

well update on the transit went in the garage today and at least 7 rockers have snapped and the rocker carrier is broken an a piece of the carrier has now dissapeared in the engine somewhere, the garage tried to tell me it had an after market chain tenioner fitted which could have caused the chain to have jumped a few teeth, but i informed them that it cant be as i brought the transit direct of ford themselves with 15,000 miles on the clock and ford was the original owners and i had always had it serviced at the garage where it is now
Was informed by an independant clutch and gearbox specialist that the other possible scenierio was that when they removed the gearbox to replace the clutch they should have blocked a hole to stop oil leaking out maybe they didnt and so when they started it later there was no oil in the tensioner for the hydralic to work so when i picked the transit up it had already jumped a tooth on the camshaft thats why it was running so roughly, he also told me that it will be a high possibiity that valves and pistons will also be knackered, and advised me even if they get it running it will only last about 3 months and the crank will be the next thing to go as he said the mk7 is a great engine but made of plastic his advised me to get another engine.
Not sure where i stand with the garage on this one as they should never have told me to drive it when they knew it had a problem
Any more comments or advise would be of great help

hi
I think bikenut has the answer but trying to prove it will get you nowhere, as for doing clutch without lifting bonnet why would you need to lift bonnet ? everything is done from underneath or in cab, going to be impossible to aportion blame to the garage, if its any comfort its highly unlikely that the valves will be damaged and the rocker cartridge isnt matched to the head so theres no reason for the head to come off, just check to make sure cam lobes havent spun on camshaft on inlet cam, when mk7s go pop they do tend to spin cams or "hook" sprocket teeth , check carefully !!
it was like that before i touched it !!

no such hole to block up.
valves and pistons not normaly damaged when chain fails, only way to know is to remove head.
if the garage had wound the engine around the wrong way, the chain would of jumped when they started it up, not when you were driving home.

p.s. their is no need to open the bonnet to do a clutch on a rear wheel drive.

hi it was making the noise when i picked it up from the garage they told me i had a slight camchain rattle which leads me to believe that it jumped a cog when they replaced the clutch and only went bang when at 60mph on the motorway
when i originally dropped it of it was fine but when i was picking it up from the garage it was running quite rough they told me they would get a price for a timing chain kit on monday and to go home
