Intake air temperature sensor

Postby upholsterit » Tue Nov 24, 2015 12:56 pm

My 2013 125PS limited has twice had an EML which then quickly turns to EMGINE MALFUNCTION and into limp mode. It happens about every 10 months/5.5K miles. Van only on 16k and it's just happened for the third time.

I've twice had to visit the dealers (good 30 mins away) to get it diagnosed (1 hour min) and then go back again to have the fault sorted. Having been through this twice, and the fault occurring again for the third time, I thought I'd call to find out what happened the previous two times.

It turned out to be the sensor located in the intercooler (5 min to change). So I bought two genuine sensors online for about £6 each 1719362 and thought I'd swap it myself.

Result was all faults cleared and back to normal.

Just wondered if any others had experienced this fault?

I've not heard of that, I'd be worried about why they fail repeatedly on your van.

Yes I had exactly the same problem on Monday morning after a very heavy frost & a frozen windscreen & obviously a very cold air intake

Had engine malfunction service now flash up & then limited revs in what seemed like 2nd - 6th gear & an amber check engine warning light displayed

It's all cleared now & been fine the last 2 days but I phoned the dealer yesterday & they said that it'll be the air intake temp sensor probably , they had no courtesy vehicles availiable until next Wednesday so its booked in for then , was only in last Thursday for the oil pump recall !!

The sensor was slightly oily. Next time it happens I'll try cleaning before replacing it. I only travel 6 miles to work and back a day with the odd long run occasionally and think it's probably down to that.

The intake temperature sensor is part of the MAF sensor on the airbox..I've unplugged it and driven the van it puts the check light on and the temperature on the dash went high (temperature came down slowly to correct level? ) the van didn't go into limp mode in 10miles there was just a bit more stutter after plugging it back in the light went out after a few miles/starts. The MAP sensor 1st picture when disconnected will disable hill assist and traction control but again the Van functions ok no limp mode? Possibly if no signal is received the ECU will use a set value a faulty sensor may give a false implausible value the ECU can't deal with so it goes into limp mode.

Just out of interest? With your short trips what is your engine oil level like is it above Max?

My oil level is within the correct range on the dipstick.

Also the air temperate intake sensor in question is not on or near the air filter housing under the bonnet. It's located under the van at the very front on the intercooler radiator. It's easy to access (just slide under the front bumper) and you'll see a green plastic sensor attached with a small single torx bolt.

I had a custom at work recently with a MAF code that kept returning.
The custom has two intake air temperature sensors IAT1 and IAT2
IAT1 I belive ispart of the MAF sensor
IAT2 had failed "the one on the inter cooler" and was showing 113 degrees centigrade on live data
Once replaced the MAF code never returned :-)

I have a 2013 transit tourneo that developed exactly the fault described here. i.e. a MAF high air flow problem followed with the vehicle going into limp mode. Within a week the EGR valve stuck open so I took it into a garage. They replaced the EGR valve but couldn't get rid of the MAF fault even after changing the MAF sensor and MAP sensor. I found this post and decided to replace the air intake sensor on the intercooler for the sake of £12 not really thinking it would work. Can't believe it instantly fixed the issue. Many thanks for posting the solution. Really appreciate it.

I've a Mk7 2.2 E5 FWD with similar issues, (see my recent post) I see someone running diagnostics was able to get a temp reading from this sensor, 113 degrees, my van is currently with the garage, if I asked them to take a reading would this pinpoint this as the potential culprit?
