Mk5 Air vent / inlet in wing

Postby Deas_andre » Wed Sep 08, 2021 8:28 pm

I'm looking for the air inlet / vent in the wing for a Mk5. I have the 2.5 TCI, 115hp with intercooler.

Part number: 97VB97874AB

I recently got a lot body work done, welding, repainting. The wing was replaced, and not realising the importance of the air inlet, the old wing went to the skip.
Until two days ago I didn't know it needed the vent either, as the air intake was turned down towards the headlight / indicators. I drove since 1500km ish like that, and I'm praying that I haven't damaged anything serious. If there are work arounds, my ears are wide open :)

I was onto the body shop, I was told that cutting a hole into the wing and to do it right means taking wing off, painting etc.

I have the air intake pipe currently turned towards the back of the indicator, air is free flowing without obstructions, from a relatively "cool" area.

In other words, wouldn't it just be a cosmetic thing to put the vent back in the wing?
Or, am I running a risk of encountering all kinds of problems very soon?

Its just a cosmetic thing...

But I can't understand why they would need to take the wing off? Its 1 big hole that can be cut with a jigsaw, and 3 small holes to be drilled.

Just use masking tape to protect the panel, then brush som primer on, brush some top coat (any colour) and whack the grille on...

I think they just don't want the work in case they make a mistake (or prehaps they don't want to admit to making one)?

It's very good to know than that it is more of Cosmetic thing. I was getting anxious there!

Yes, I believed that it was simple enough to cut the hole carefully, then primer and brush/ paint etc. The reply was that the metal will inevitably heat up, bubble / crack the paint and it will start to rust. The right way to do is to paint the whole panel again, for which reason it needs to be taken off, I was told.

It does sound a bit like they are talking themselves out of a job alright. However, I'll have a chat with them again, as in the meantime rust appeared in a different untreated section and I have to go back to them for that.
