Looking for a MIG welder

Postby chaslynch » Sun Feb 26, 2017 9:25 am

Hi, looking for a new or second hand welder for general body repairs.
Had to give the one I was borrowing back.
Has anybody got one for sale, or can anybody point me to a good quality, but cheaper new one?
Thanks for looking.

When you say cheaper what is your budget?.
You'll want a machine that will go down to 20 or 30 amps for body work, I'd also avoid a gasless only unit it's horrible spattery stuff and runs hotter so more chance of blowing through, it's handy to have the option to use gas.
Some people are like slinkies.... not good for much but bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Up to 300 . definitely needs to be gas, iv seen wolf ones cheap. But they get mixed reviews.
Really only want to buy once .

The sealy machines are OK but you'd struggle to do any chassis work with that one, you ideally need a bit more than 100 amps more like 130 amps. The Clarke machines from machine mart are decent for hobby use or the bluemig from welders warehouse get good reviews. Also have you budgeted for ppe? . Throw away the little hand held mask that a lot of welders come with and get an auto darkening one. The £30 odd ones on eBay are surprisingly good, also a decent pair of gauntlets can be had for about a tenner. Nice to have but not totally necessary is a flame proof jacket. A heavy denim will do or go to a charity shop get a cheap leather jacket, rip the lining out and that will serve you well.
