Mk1 and 2 independant front suspension conversion!

The donor is a 6 stud, single wheel.
The Mk1 is a 6 stud, double wheel.

pretty sure you can swap the hubs over - so you should be ok

:roll: Dont no if this is any help Luke, But Ive had to fit another caliper to my mk4 it came off a mk3 it fitted but I had to use the mounting bracket off the mk4 but mine's a twin wheeler

unfortunatly it doesnt (at the moment) but good know as i might end up fitting 4 pots off the twin wheeler

the cling film was just to stop the threads going rusty as i kept it outside for a while

So, been looking at putting a MK5 Subframe in my MK2 but don't want the hassle of fabricating the Shock Mounts.
Having studied the Picture of the Shock welded in it's original position, I'm now wondering if an adjustable Top Arm could be mounted to the Subframe.
This could also have a Shock Mount grafted on with a view to finding a suitable SA to attach to the original Mount on the inner Wing.
My theory is that apart from grinding off the Bump Stop, the whole conversion would be reversable.

that was how i did the 1st one, but you will need to cut off the original shock mount and into the inner wing as the mk5 shock top position is inside the bodyline

a better way might be to find some hubs/suspension with a top and bottom wishbone and attache them to the mk5 subframe then as you say fit a shocker to the original mount

I was thinking something like this.
Looks like it would sit around the Spring To Mount quite nicely. Would just need to remove the Shock from the Hub and fit some sort of Plate to take the Ball Joint.
Would leave the original Lower Arm on the Subframe.

I'm a bit further into my conversion. I welded the shocks to the subframe and trial fitted the whole lot to the mk1.

It's sitting pretty good I think.

I will probably move the whole lot about 2 cm further backward to get the wheels more in the center of the wheel arch.

I'm a little concerned about the ride height. It looks great now but the bump stops are still on. Once these will be removed it will lower the van some more. Perhaps too much?

looking good you can adjust the ride height with different spring i think ive has 2 or 3 sets on mine since ive built it

i also moved mine forward to get the wheel in the centre of the arch

dont think ive stopped with this it's just taking ages to cut out, eventually ive got it so i can offer it up to the mk1 just need time to get up there

been a few years since this post has been active, i was wondering if you have photos still of your conversion luke, pics without photobucket across them so more detail can be seen, i'm gathering info ready for getting a mk1 fire truck later this year, i'm thinking mk5 front suspension, and mk8 LSD rear axle, not sure on engine choice yet, got a few options in the 500hp ball park. 6 or 8 cylinder from USA.
back in the day i did a few 24v cosworth mk3/4/5 transits, but my dream was always a fast (very) mk1, it will be a twin wheel mk1 so thats why i think a mk5 is better option, also i have a friend thats scrapping a mk5 chassis cab soon and need to know what parts i need.
any advise would be great,
