sunroof in a mk5

Postby coolboard » Sun Apr 27, 2008 10:56 am

Hi Guys, I'm a newbe, so please be gentle! You guys have put a lot into this forum, which is great. I've finally had to go the pratical way, and scrap my beloved mk1 mr2, very sad. So Iv'e gone from one extreme to the other... tiny mk2 to mk5 lwb lowroof... I don't like it, I bloody loves it!

But I've spent the last hour looking for advice on this... some of you have said its there, just search, but I have and I can't find it!

Basically, I want to fit two sunroofs into a lwb low roof mk5, one in the cab, the other at the back. Yes its the corrugated roof so I know it won't be fun... but I reckon worth it.

So if anyone has been thu this, please fill me in...

Many thanks

I'm not a fan of sunroofs as they usually leak :x

On a Transit which has ribs running along the length of the roof means that it will puddle at the sun roof/s :( :(

On the plus side of things, it will make for a lighter and airy interior :!: :D

Been having the same thoughts... thats why I thought I'd ask, see if anyone has come up with a good way of doing it, and know which type of sunroof fits best. Otherwise its gonna be a bit of trial and error. If anyone does know, please let me know, and save me lots of hassle...
Thanks,

i fancied a go at this too - i'd got a granada scorpio with a full electric sunroof - my plan was to cut out the entire roof piece and weld it in, then shape the ribs to suit :D

but i was talked out of it - i'd still like to see it done tho 8)

i did this to my mk2 escort about 18 years ago......

its not that hard to do and you could easily replace a section of the ribbed roof with flat steel and cut the tilt and slide in, if you did a large enought piece you wouldnt get any puddling.

ive just sold it, bit gutted but i knew i wasnt going to get it back on the road anytime soon......and i desperately needed the space :(

bloke who bought it is going to cut the whole roof off at the pillars and fit a replacement to turn it into a replica rally car.

should have gone the custom car route.....but its not my place to say now.

in 15 years time rally rep mk2s will be as common as dog muck, (relatively speaking) and there wont be many original custom cars left...

back to the topic....if you're gonna put a flip up roof in i would cut a piece of steel in at the top of the ribs and fillet down to the channels with small bits welded in, so all the water runs away from the roof.
