my trick electric gear selector

Postby dangeeeeerousss » Fri Jul 28, 2006 8:34 am

hi all i was asked about this last night so thought id post in here to give some of you a few ideas and its very basic to make if you know a little about eletrics
Image
right basically its a 12 volt ram with micro switches on to stop it going past the gear you want this bolts to the floor between the driver and passenger seat single passenger where your handbrake would be
chop the auto gear select down as near to the floor as possible leaving enough room to bolt the ram on to the selector then box it all in with a custom console look the tits mate and baffles people right now if you was wandering about bolting it to the floor where the hand brake is .. i dont have a handbrake i have another one of these bolted under the van to the chasis connected to a toggle switch and this pulls the hand brake cable its very cool i also have the back doors on a remote control switch which when pressed one door will open then when thats fully open the other door opens i will put a movie clip in the gallery if your interested but it will prob be next week when ive got it all rewired..they are awesome especially when the old bill are behind you and you open the doors while driving and they pull you to tell you your doors are insecure they try them and there locked well funny im not a popular chap round here for this reason and they still fall for it..lol

thats the hardest bit keep an eye out on ebay a mate of mine once mentioned he could get them easy because there used on some of the plant machinary im hoping to get round his tonight so ill question it see if i can find out a source for them i also thought about turning my side slide door to gullwing and using the rams but you would prob need to extend them though i havent used these on the back doors i really need to goto the van and get some pics really to show you but basicaly for the back doors ive used to old wheel chair motors and gear boxeseither side of the back of the van just in side the back door pillars then attached an arm to the final gear cog with a bearing on each end a bit like a track rod end which then connects to a little bracket on each door ive also used a couple of micro switches to stop one door when fully opened and then to open the second all on 1 press of the remote the remote switch i picked up off ebay for £15 with the fob you can also get them halfords prob a 1000 other places to lol. dont if i made that clear enough im off to do some more work on it tomorrow ill take the cam with me and get some picsjust means ill have to empty some crap out of it lol its full of van parts at the min untill next week when i intend on hhaving it back on the road but its a shame i wont have the body kit on by then having to rush to get it on the road at the min with the new child booster seat law coming out coz i cant get 5 kids in a rover 25 all in booster seats and car seats thats why the beemer had to go!! but ill keep you informed and also source some rams to i would also like to put lambo doors on the front 2 and try using the ram system so they were remote too how trick would that be lol
cheers mate

yes i suppose it could be or even upside down mounted on the underneath the chassis
i only put it inside because i was unsure about the electrics getting wet but if id of thought more about it i could over come that anyway ill look into that when i locate an auto but the hanbrake on only has one micro switch and id have grease it every quarter but thats only coz i only ever used park an never used the hand brake it was there more as a novelty
...
that is a good point though would look even tricker if it was just carpet and no gear change or handbrake it was also a good security issue because the amount of my mates that would nick my keys messing about and would get it start but could never move it coz they didnt know where the gears were

Aston Martin Paddle shift gearboxes use hydraulics to shift gears on the 6 speed manual box and thats all mounted onto the box under the car.

I know this cos me mate has just ripped all the hydraulics off one to fit it into his cossie powered mk1 escort and it has a normal H pattern shift gate on it under all the crap.

comercial vehicle breakers sometimes have 12 volt rams available off tail lifts or wheelchair lifts.

linear actuator, windscreen wiper motor will also be strong enough, could mount a pulley on it and cable operate it maybe, garage door opener would do the job as well and you can get them with remote controls.

soloniod doors are cool as well, you can use a central locking soloniod to pull the bar that normally goes to the door handle and then smooth your doors off, ive done it on a few cars, i wired it up so the drivers door opened when i beeped the alarm remote and then had a switch on the dash to pop the passenger door on my pickup truck. no external door handles makes for good security, but make sure you run some leads from the battery somewhere you can get jump leads on em!!

one transit i do have something you maybe interested in and thats front drivers and passengers rails and runner that go on the front seat so you can unclip the drivers seat and put it in the passengers so a wheel chair user can drive from his wheelchair and i know this sort of thing are very hard to come by
i used to make wheel chairs and mobility scooters till i did my back in
cheers

Cheers dangeeeeerousss i've sort the seating thing out
A bit of a pain as the powers to be in australia are
how do you say [PRICKS] when it come to modifications

I used a linear actuator mounted under the floor with a sliding hook setup on
the inside that hooks on to my chair and pulls down at 250lb
needless to say i do not move

Again thanks for the offer

suicide doors would look cool to[/quote]

hi yes i agree suicide doors would look cool i had considered them too.
i also had a similar thing to what you have it was a scaled down version of what is on the back of an artic lorry that holds the trailers on and when your wheelchair drove into it. it would anchor you down but dont have this anymore
