Changing colour of dashboard/instrument lights

Postby alkebab3001 » Sun Oct 24, 2010 11:18 am

Hi y'all,
I have a 2001 mk6 lwb t350. The lights on the dash at night are about as bright as a lump of coal (unlit). I was wondering if it was possible to change the dull green for a bright blue and red. My wife has a vw and that is the colour scheme on hers. Its a great colour combo. If anyone has done it, pics and an idea of time, difficulty and cost would be great.

Cheers in advance

The clocks are the same as the mk5 aren't they? It can be done but red isn't the best colour to do it, I tried but went for a different approach in the end. Blue might work quite well as they seem to be brighter (AlanN did blue LEDs in his mk3 clocks). Switches are easy enough to change the colour of and I think the clock is the same as a mk4/5 fiesta so that's possible to change as well. I've got some pics of my mk5 and the daugters fiesta that I've done the switches and clock in, I'll get on the laptop in a minute and post them up

Standard faced speedo with red LEDs

White Lockwood faced dial with the same red LEDs

I enede up fitting some LED tape infront of the locks in the end, picture isn't great and it looks really bright at the top of the cocks but its really not that bad in the flesh so to speak
Image

as for switches theyre pretty easy to do, I've done my mk5 switches red with a bright blue "on" light
Image

Also did my window switches in red and some blue ones for a mate

daughters switches and clock in her fiesta (pats light is also blue) and the little "on" light is red now instead of the wishy washy orange it was

window switches in my step sons Ka changed them to superright green LEDs

Hi Dirtydog,
how easy r the interior switches to convert and what do you need to do and where do you get the parts (colour lights) for inside from. Could you post a step by step guide.

Thanks

Mac.

What switches do you want to change the colour of? Procedure varies with different switches.
I use 3mm LEDs as that what is used in the standard switches. You can get red, blue, green, yellow and white. Sometimes gettuem from eBay and sometimes from maplin

Are you after blue back lighting or blue lighting from the front like I've done with the red

Your clocks will have bulb holders like these...
Image

you can fit the 5mm capless type LED bulbs into te holders which will give you something like this...
Image

and when it's lit up it will look a bit like this...
Image

another option would be to solder some 5mm (or maybe even 3mm) superbright LEDs with resistors into the holders, slightly more hassle but may work better (I think this is what AlanN did with his mk3 clocks)

The switches are pretty easy to do if you can use a soldering iron
