Thanks one hell of an idea, just get the axle stands out sharpish!

2 tonne I should think. Scissor single acting rams sometimes struggle to cope with 1.5T. Some 3 or 5 stage rams seem to tip 3 tonne. Hydraulic outriggers?

Yeah that's a good one. You just missed two on Ebay, one a three way ended. Went for £150, which is quite cheap.

damn theres always a bargain i miss on ebay, never mind.

can you or anyone tell me the real facts about tube vs square section,

and aluminium alloy vs steel,

searched as much as i can and just get a load of bull by the sounds of it, like aluminium has to be 3x thicker to be as strong as steel and its also 3x lighter so no gain... :? :? :? :?

also square section is stronger than tube if the load is transfered to it at 45degrees as if it were diamond shape, but the main reason i was thinbking of using tube (for my secret project) over square is it looks nicer and should weight less than equivelant in square.......................... :? :? :? :? :?

These tables are quite handy.

http://www.info-home.co.uk/work/material/chs.php

You want to be looking at the Second moment of area for either the x or y axis and the weight I should of thought. I always though Circular hollow section was strongest.

Ally not really any good for serious load bearing. Rectangular Hollow Section Steel is the best weight for strength.

What I would do if its somrthing I'm not familiar with is select a suitable over engineered material - say 100 x 50 x 4mm RHS, then find some CHS that matches the moment of area value as that is a rough guide to strength of the stuff.

Have you tryed the migwelding forum? Always get an answer on there!

migwelding forum, ill have a look there.

are you saying tube is stronger for weight of material used than square, but rectangular is even stronger than tube for weight of material used :?:
