Anyone help with headlining the rear?

Postby coffeemonster » Thu Mar 10, 2011 5:17 pm

Hello,

I'm looking to put headlining into the rear of my Mk7 SWB, Mid-top. Ideally I want to put some rockwool insulation behind the back of the headlining, and install some strip light LEDs set into the headlining.

I have a few ideas of how to get it done, but does anyone have any pointers or ideas on how best to do this?

cheers chaps,

I wouldn't use rockwool if I were you.

unless you go about 6" thick or more the insulation value will be nominal and it will soak up moisture like a sponge.

Polystyrene or foil lined foam would be better. If using polystyrene don't let it come into direct contact with electrical wiring as over time the insulation migrates into it.

Do it in three sections so that the edges go halfway over each roof support - then you have something to fix to. Ply is best. Insulate by sticking foam sheet to the metal ceiling - that will help to cut down drumming too. While you are making and fitting the boards is the time to sort your leds - you could drill holes and recess them in (I did mine as individual leds in 4 rows of 24, looks well smart).

Doing mine next weekend - I've got a few rolls of that thermal foil stuff from B&Q, going to glue that to the roof and into all the nooks and crannies, also got some expanding foam to fill any tricky hollows I can't reach. Want to make sure all that cold metal is covered, condensation in the van has been awful when the weather is bad.

Once that's all in, I'm going to glue some battens on to the roof struts, and screw the ceiling boards into them. I'll be carpeting the boards, and also sticking some nice recessed 12v spotlights in there, so that'll all be done before it gets permanently fixed to the roof. Going to use some pretty light board for the ceiling so it can flex into shape a bit easier.

A slightly less DIY-intensive route would be to check out your local breakers yards for a minibus based on the same body as your van, and see if you can get hold of the factory headlining from that.

Good luck, let us know how you get on!
