Standard Wheel Refurb

Postby labtec104 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 1:22 pm

Hi guys im knew to this site. So Hi. lol

I recently started my own business and have a Ford Transit 280 SWB in white.

There are a lot of rust patches which I am really determined to sort out as it makes the van look so much older than it is.

First, The wheels are in a right mess rusted completely. I want to start a project but i am new to all of this. There is so much rust on wheels that i had to chisel the spare wheel away from the holder.

So basically how do i start? lol

I have most tools and i have a fair idea but need reassuring.

Shall i sand down with a wire brush? Heavy duty sand paper? once i have sanded down to the metal on the wheels do i just put an anti rust primer on first?

Thanks :D

easyest way would be to have them shotblasted

but transit wheels arnt exactly rare and it would problebly be cheeper to find a decent set and just paint them- even get a set with tyres so you have some spares :D

Hi mate. Well im definately going to paint them. So two of the five wheels i have are really bad but the other three just look quite messy.

I want to repaint them. Should i start by wirebrushing the loose crap off them. then sand down and add a coat of some sort of rust prevention?

Once that is done do i just then simply paint and laquer? Im not after the perfect finish as they are only steel wheels - but i jst want them to look fresher :D

Also what colour would u recommend? or keep normal?

A wire brush in a drill might make the going easier.

hi we refurb about four sets of wheels a month. what i suggest you do is flat the wheels down with an 80 grit production paper and when the wheels are flatted down enough apply an etch primer just a couple of coats then using a scotch brite (red) when dry lightly flat the wheels down then apply several coats of primer if 2 pack primer only 3 coats but if using rattle cans 5-6 coats letting them tack off in between coats when finished flat them down with 7-800 wet and dry Let them dry then you can paint them. Some wheel silvers come ready to use dont have to use clear coat to obtain a shine. Also dont forget to mask up the tyres and valve stem. Cheers Ivan

Hi im going to start today as i have a couple of days off.

I am going to use a wire bursh drill part to get the excess rust off.
Then smooth off with some decent grit paper.

Do i need to use some sort of rust free primer? or can i just go straight on with my normal paint primer?

Thanks, andy :D

I have normal silver wheel spray. but i also have white.

its a white transit, should i keep the wheels silver or do i go above board and paint them white? i havent seen this before on a transit but am eager to here opinions.

arhh mate they do look good :) :D

I quite like the rim around the bottom of the van too, maybe in black though rather than red. I will definately think about that as there is so much bodging up ive got to do around the lower of the van and arches due to rust. that may be worth a shot.

Cheers

black around the bottom makes them look like they are covered in underseal - imo
good luck with the van and keep us posted with pictures
