there should be a way to do it, the Police have a setup on their cars that allows them to take the keys out and leave the engine running, if you depress the clutch it stalls the engine apparently, but other than that i dont know how its done

My van, (connect) is an ex autoglass van, and that used to do it.
I still have the switch, but its not wired up.
I was parked at the lights when another autoglass van pulled up, and he gave me a very quick demo, but his worked via the hand brake as at first it did not work, and he said, oh sh*t, handbrakes not on, so he pulled it up. switched of and removed the keys, and it was still running.
The lights changed then, so we moved of.

It can easily be done with a switch, a relay, and a few fuses

That's true up until Mk5, however doing it like that will not provide the security of the engine stalling if theclutch is pressed, or handbrake released

shouldnt be too difficult, its a basic stop/start curcuit using a relay - run the on position of the key to the start button of the relay that holds in, and put a n/c stop button under the clutch that drops the relay out - but if the key is in the stop button wont drop it out as its the equivilent of holding your finger on the start button :D

as for the starter part that would be left alone :)

i'm sure some electrical types could post up a drawing :D

Had it done to my MK5 recovery Truck y a friend of mine, It involved a few lengths of wire, A couple of fuses & some relays.

It was really good to leave it running whilst winching cars on to the truck

Where abouts are you? sure he could do it on yours

Get a turbo timer from an old diesel truck, you can set them to run after the ignition is shut off for up to 5 minutes. A little fiddling by someone that knows electronics can cut the timer bit out easy enough. That way you have your steering lock in place as a bit of a safety thing. Doing it this way you can set it so you can kill the ignition whenever you want or leave it running.

If you are anywhere neat the M1 in the Midlands then you can come and remove the Keyless Running system out of my Mk6 if you want it? Its all hooked up and functional and I have even got the User Manual (scrappy piece of A4) from the original installer with instructions on how to use it.

Basically, it will only activate with the handbrake on and as soon as you take the handbrake off it will drop the relay and stall the engine. Its only a few wires, relay and switch tucked up inside the steering cowling. With mine being installed you can see exactly which wires need to be spliced to make it work. I want it out of my van to eliminate it as a cause of some intermittent running issues ive had in the past.
