Luke
Glad they do the trick ,you are gonna hate me for this. But for the Mk2 pair why dont you mount the brackets that you have welded onto the axle casing above the axle, run your links forward, and make the bracket for the front shorter, that will reduce your ground clearance problems (looking at your pics there seems to be a fair amount of space above the axle. This would have (all but) given you a 4 link set up (and 4 out of 5 ain't bad :) )
Just for future consideration, there is no reason why the 'links' cant run backwards to the rear of the vehicle (usually the links are on vehicles with a 'less strong' chassis rails or none behind the suspension mounting points).Neither do they NEED to be parallel with the ground. On the old Lotus Cortinas the bars were all but (in plan view) a W shape ,the mount for the centre upper of the W was welded to the axle casing below the diff, thats why they used to rip out so easily, one mount trying to do the job of 2.

Tony's is the mk2 so he could do it that way
the reason i went for undeneith is if you take the spring clamp as the pivot point you get more leverage that way - to get the same effect if you mounted them on the top you'd need to go 3-4" taller on the axle mounts i think it could be done and you'd almost have the link bars mounted on the chassis rails right up to the floor :)

one advantage (convincing myself) of the bars dropped down is if i hit a kerb or something it'll stop damage to the side pipes

Hi Luke,
Where do you mean when you say the spring 'clamp' the U bolts or the front spring 'hanger' ?

Heres another one to keep the grey cells going. A bracket such as you made to weld to the axle casing holding one end of a shock absorber the other end of which fix's onto a chassis bracket, so the damper is roughly horizontal. (Make it an adjustable & you could 'dial in' the amount of damping in both compression & tension !) Wouldn't have thought you could run with it the whole time (unless you rose joint the shocker ends, and rose joints don't tend to last too long on road cars). After all you are not trying to replace the suspension medium, just trying to take 'shock/violence' out of the axle movement, exactly what a shocker is built to do !
Have fun
