aussie 3.8 V6 supercharged conversion with pics

Postby hypobuang » Thu Sep 06, 2012 1:15 pm

Man, what a trip. 6hrs to Sydney in the hitop sitting on 80kmh the whole way. usually takes 4.5hrs in a normal car. the hitop needs a highway diff!
so why did i do it?
well i had to pick up a bike I scored at the auctions and check out another transit.
the one I looked at had a holden ccommodore supercharged V6 in it. nice.
the engines a 2002 vs model. ecotec.
the van had ran outta rego, and the engine wasnt engineered but it was a professional pat gardner kit.
all looked good. I swapped the rego plates (alledgedly!) off my hitop and took it for a spin. it felt real gutsy so I bought it and will now finish off all the little bits & have it engineered. $$$$?

ill keep you guys posted on the progress. one of the first thing will be to check out the diff as she sits on 2500 rpm at 100k's so shes only getting 7.5km per litre at the moment. thirsty little devil...
but I do love the pickup. sitting on 110kmh you just touch the throttle and it overtakes so swiftly... sweet!

ill get some better pics up soon as i can.

now i have to get the train 6hrs back down to pick up the hitop and drive it back at 80k's again.... not looking forward to that!

thanks for the comments mates. Ill give it a good wash and get some better pics, especially around the crossmember and tranny mounts. its pretty grubby from the leaking ATF fluid over everything, so will fix that leak as well. Only major problem the engineers want $1000-1500 to compliance it and then its another grand for the rego. still a good van for around 5k, even if it is thirsty.... waaahhhhh...

That Pat Gardener kit does look well engineered mate, not a bad deal you got on the van there, considering the cost of the kit 8)

I'd love to stick one of those V6's on the Mt75 5 speed box, just need someone to stick one in the post to the UK for me,

its been a bit of a nighmare sorting through different engineers. each one has different ideas and requirements. I did just find out today that mine has a vy engine though/ that may make it a bit easier as its an 03, model and the van is an 02....

That's awesome mate, I've been doing a bit of reading about the dropin commodore motors, where in sydney are you, would love to have a look at it one day.

Cheers

You chaps 'down under' are fortunate to have the T5 option, us Brits only have the Mt75 to play with :(

The diesel Mt75 is commonplace in the UK and with such a large bell housing opening it will accommodate almost any flywheel diameter.

UK legislation allows us to use older engines as a retro-fit, hence the popularity of the V6 Essex conversions we produce;

It would be good to try other V6 options, the Nissan Fairlady V6 is one we have been asked to 'look into', are they a popular engine in Aus?
