Sound insulation/deadening / Silence of the Di ! Is it poss?

Postby AndyG » Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:47 pm

Well there's only two things that people moan about a MK5 Transit :!:

Rusty front wheel arches :!: (now cured :D )
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=26443

And the noise of the Di engine/injection pump :!: :x :x :x

And boy is mine one of the noisiest there is :!:   (ask Guy88 who can confirm and has compared)

Well I've had enough :!:
What made my mind up about doing something about it, was when I had a ride in my old 1996 van :!: Oooooooh :!: Sooooooo quiet :!:

Having spoken to various people about sound proofing, the word Dynamat (xtreme) kept on popping up :!:

So guess what................

Dynamat xtreme was purchased and the attack has started :!: :D

In fact, it started last year with the ceiling above the driver :!:

I'm going through this sound deadening and making notes as I go along and will tell you all what parts of the van make a noticeable difference :!:

Firstly the purchases :D
Image

Image

Here's a sheet of Dynamat against one of my wheels, so you get an idea of how large they are :D
Image

With the A pillar trims sunvisors and courtesy lamp removed, it was an easy job getting the roof lining out of the cab area :!:
Image

Three sheets later, the ceiling is virtually completely covered :!: :o The small bits trimmed off weren't wasted either :!:
They went in the edges :!:

Image

For this stuff to be effective, it must be pressed firmly into the grooves :!: :D
Image

That's the hail stones, rain and the howling ladders quietened down :!: :D :D

Not to be rude, but I've never heard of them :o

I've also tried a recommended alternative, as you'll see a bit later :!: :)

Next bit down from the top is the dash :!:
The air intakes at the front, underneath the windscreen look like a good candidate for noise amplification :x
So wipers off, black scuttle trim removed, and a good dose of Dynashield sound deadening spray :!: :D

Image

And the other one :!:

Well I certainly wasn't looking forward to this bit :(
But comparing the underside of my dash to others (older ones), mine didn't seem to have any sound absorbing at all :!: :o :(

So the dashboard is taken apart :!:
Image

Switches all out :!:
And replugged on the other side of the dash to keep them all in order :D

Unlike earlier dashboards, these late ones come out with the reinforcement tube :!:

There's also a very well hidden 10mm bolt that I've marked for you, in case you ever need to remove a late smiley dash :D

It's a good idea taking photos, as you can see where all the cable clips go for reference :!:

There's a reinforcing chassis like box section just below the windscreen that looks like a good noise amplifier

So this was sprayed internally with the Dynasheild spray :!: :D
Image

Next plan was to Dynamat the bulkhead/firewall :!:
Starting from the top (below the windscreen) the Dynamat was cut into smaller sections, so it would fit in a lot easier :!: :D
With the backing still on, it allows you to first mould it into the shape you want :D This makes it a hell of a lot easier to fit into difficult places once the backing is removed and it's all sticky :!: :!:
