Retro fit Aircon - Any Ideas

I guess this would be a custom/one-off?

I am thinking about retro-fitting aircon to my 1992 Tourneo style 9 seater. Has anyone retro fitted aircon on their transit? Would it be easier to find a later Tourneo and take the aircon from that.

Just an idea at the moment, I have a feeling it could cost more than the van to do it?

i think if you could find a complete system from a scraper it woundnt be to hard but its alot of work ,ie you need the complete heater unit ,aircon compressor, aircon rad and fans etc

My mate works in a scrappie and phones me when they get anything worth looking at, well he phoned me about an x BT van that had aircon so I went the next day and it had been robbed already.

air con in spain is great in the uk its great too about 2 weeks a year

why not see if getting a aircon unit that fits onto the roof...it uses water to cool air..u have to fill a water resovoir up and it runs for about 40hours on one fill..expensive but easier to fit that the ford air con....the aircon units are called bycool evolution air condition units....from kudauk..i have a mail address sales@kudauk.ltd.uk this address is for enquires about anthing or to but anything..i think they can also send out a catalogue if you mail them.. visit there web site for pics.i dont know the address. but they are about £1000...there are others but this is the only one i have to hand..

I chuckle at the thought of fitting aircon to a Trannie in England - but that said, I do remember stifling hot days sometimes. I migrated here to the Northern Territory of Australia. Every day for the past 4 months the temperature has not been below 38 degrees C and even I haven't got an air con - boohoo. But I am looking at fitting a Falcon unit in - but all the heater hoses have perished so will have to find a supplier

Well the real reason is that it is a 9 seater and I could use aircon to keep the kids cool on long journeys across southern europe! For everything else I will just open the windows! Cheers TT

it would work out cheaper for you to sell your van and buy one with aircon allready fitted!

When i put the rover engine in my escort i scrapped all the aircon bits, it doesnt look too dificult to fit, eventually i'll be putting a scorpio engine in my transit, im not a fan of aircon so ill not be bothering with fitting that either!!
is your a petrol or diesel tricky?

Hi Chris,

I've been thinking along the same lines in my mk 1. Condensor coil, pulleys and compressor etc will be no problem from a falcon but I'm unsure how to go about the fan and coil internally. Might have to do a bit of sheet metal work and fabricate something to fit under dash, passenger side. Actually some others may have an idea of a donor car that has a basic coil and fan that could be utilised?

Had some other crazy ideas.

1. Fit 240v generator under floor at rear and then have a small household split system with compressor unit on cab roof.

2. Find a petrol driven truck refrigeration system. Boy that would be chilly.

Lets keep this discussion going... I need some more ideas.
