zetec into transit?

Just a thought, would it be worthwhile fitting a 2.0 zetec engine (as found in monedeos) to a mk2 tranny, as a whole aftermarket industry exists for converting these to inline applications. being so old a mk2 wouldnt need the complicated injection system or cats, so potentially a lot of power available.

yes thats a good idea new engine in old..zetec on a nice set of side draught webbers...or get aftermarket injection system..
I think the zetec is the same bellhousing fitment as a pinto engine...but I only think!!! I havent done this myself but others have..

I origanally considered this but rejected it against a 16V DOHC I4 out of a scorpio because:-
the DOHC is allready RWD
so exhaust is allready pointing in the right direction
engine mounts to suit transit allready available
the problem with the zetec is coupling it to a tranny mt75 will go to a tranny type 9 no probs though!
but a lot of the mk1/2 escorts are choosing the zetec not many are going for the scoprio engine!
and in the mk6 ford fitted the 2.316v DOHC engine - not the zetec why?

a zetec bolts up to a type 9? thats very interesting! I have a mk2 tranny with a type 9 and also a sheddy old mondeo with a good 2.0 zetec! I'll see how bad the mundano fails its MOT and it might become an engine donor

i think you will find the thrmostat or something is on the back of the engine and when turned to fit the RWD tranny it fouls the bulkhead - i think it does in the escorts anyway! but you can buy a part that relocates it!!

nice one, cheers. I remember reading in practical classics or something that zetecs were very popular in RWD escorts now, and also the westfield 7 type kit cars so the parts to convert to RWD are available.

it may be possible, i did start to look at this myself but far to involved for me , i couldnt think of any engine to fit into the mk1 so this is why i went for the 3ltr v6 essex out of a transit!

I dont blame you! The essex sounds nicer too, and all that low down grunt suits a transit perfectly. only reason I thought zetec was because of the fuel economy and scope for tuning potential

zetecs were very popular in RWD escorts now, and also the westfield 7 type kit cars so the parts to convert to RWD are available.

This is true I've run westfields for years manily with XE 2.0 16v Vauxhalls via a type 9 box so if you need info or parts for conversion to Zetec I can put you in contact with people

Personally, i think the tranny is perfect for the zetec, as you're never really going to want more than the stock 136 PS - and its a relatively cheap conversion, bringing good power and fuel economy too.

Its just when people buy these engines with tuning in mind, cos they just arent worth it - far too expensive and pretty poor returns TBH.

I think the reason the DOHC I4-16 hasnt taken off, luke, is simply rarity - they were only ever used in the scorpios so never made it in big numbers - But if you can find a 2300 DOHC, youve got possibly the best engine ford made as standard for a conversion ! ... LOADS of torque, economy...and 150 BHP as standard !

what put me off the 2.3 was its less economical than the 2.0 according to the scorpio site!
but i'd still go for it if the right car/engine turned up!!!

Best thing about the Zetec? take all the emission gear of it and you looking at 160BHP from an otherwise standard engine
CVH EFI manifold can be adapted to fit and ashley do a zetec RWD Ex manifold, seen a few fitted in cortina's of all Mks, only bad bit is needing to relocate the thermostat a proper made up conversion costs ni on £200 JUST to relocate the thermostat

The only reservation I would have with the DOHC as used in mk3 granadas and very late model sierras is that if you ever cook it chances are its knackered. head gaskets are a proper swine of a job on these, messing with oil pressure valves, dropping cam sprockets into the sump etc. but I always found them very economical even when strapped to a heavy granada shell, mine used to get 40mpg

Like Buzz said, theres loads of Zetecs running in Westfields and the like, the exhaust comes out the correct side and the engine mounts should line up without too much bother. They`ll bolt straight onto an MT75 box (with the right cluth plate), they`re almost bulletproof and 200BHP is relativly easy to acheive. The parts for relocating the thermostat housing are now easily obtained too.

Should stop there now otherwise i`ll find meself with a diesel Westfield and a 200BHP transit.
