The problem being, even when the door is up, the bottom of the door stops you getting in the seat... Ive seen this van from the kids show in Southend and they had to climb under the doors. There was a guy selling plans on how to make them on ebay a while back.

i like these lambo doors and i think they look the nuts on a custom van but i wouldn't want them on a day to day van - too impractical :( if i was going for something trick and practical i'd do suicide doors - where the door hinges normally but in the B pillar :D at least you'd still be able to get in and out ok :D

Suicide doors are called suicide doors for a good reason. Though on a Transit I suspect they would have to be re-named, 'amputate at the knee doors' :?

just googled suicide doors http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_door and it's made me think about it in a different light  i cant see them being as awkward as i 1st thought when you approch a chair you would go from the front - its more of a natural way :D i think when door locks were primative in the 50's there was a chace the door could spring open but i cant see it with modern door latches - just make sure your wearing a seatbelt

i was talking to catdaddy about these the other week and one problem he pointed out was the B pillar on the n/s might not be strong enough to hold the weight due to the sliding door space behind it  it would also be awkward to strengthen as the fuel tank filler is in that pillar too :) i'm sure it could be done with a bit of thought - just not as simple as bolting a pair of hinges on

Well I am very surprised that the reference Luke posted seems to gloss over
the main reason they were called suicide doors. They were so damn dangerous.
Before the law was made to blame the 'driver' opening the door carelessly, there was no clear 'at fault' definition. If you think about it if someone incautiously opened a 'suicide door' stepped out and the door was struck by for instance a passing truck, the 'driver's legs would be chopped off at the shins by the door closing against the 'running board', and probably be beheaded by the door closing against the upper door frame. Doors were probably a lot heavier then than now, they had sturdy wooden frames with steel panels on + the glass, that added up and made a door quite heavy, clout that with a 10 ton truck at 25/30 mph & said door will have a hell of a lot of 'momentum' (if that's the correct 'modern' word ?). The same scenario with doors opening the 'modern' way takes all the damaging metal away from the careless door opening driver. Additionally and think this was also a major factor, opening a suicide door onto a passing cyclist pushed the cyclist into the traffic approaching from the opposite direction, now the cyclist gets 'stopped' by the door !

i look at it this way terry........... if you are ford designing and building 1 million transits then its pritty much a cast iron certanty that at least 1 will be involved in the type of incidents you mention :!:
but if you take 1 or 2 custom vans that are modified and built with suicide doors chances are they wont be involved in any of those incidents :!: but it's pritty much a cast iron certanty they will look cool as f**k  8)
