Good question! he was happy with the conversion!! but he was concerned about the corrosion on inner wings - as it was 300mm (thats 12" to you  ) from a suspention mount, ie the strut top!
but i argued it wasnt it as it wasnt attached and therefore more than 300mm away!! after about 1 hour of argueing/ looking in mot testers handbook he agreed and passed it!
My regular MOT man would have been ok with it as he's sensable :) but the camper wouldn't fit in his garage!!!
The guy i sold it to 'Bob S' is an ex-mot tester and knows his stuff so he'll have no problems with it!! he's also doing most of the welding anyway!!! :D

By that I take it that you don't need an engineer's certificate when doing conversions like that in the U.K., which is what needs to be done in Australia.

How much does the inspection/certification/permit for a job like that cost?

Here you wouldn't get much change out of a thousand dollars.

I know that you are in the U.K. since it says so in your profile so you need an engineer's certificate there, then?

but you get that with any modifications :x

For free from the "MOT man", or is that a separate procedure?

No, only if the insurance says so. But not to be road legal.

I would have thought regulations were a lot more similar between Australia and the U.K.

update - ive fitted the new painted up crossmember today - ive got a pair of 120 Di front springs and cut 1 complete link out  mabe too much but we'll see  and ive still got the minibus ones if i need them :D the reason i cut 1 link is i had one snap about a ¼ of a link and it didnt alter the ride height :? anyway i'm painting them as i type and all going well should fit them tomorrow, i'm wanting to get it back as a rolling shell so i can work on the van easier :D then all thats left for this conversion will be finishing welding the n/s top mount and cosmetics like the cowl for the mk4 column, hopefully mk2 stalks will fit it but i havent tried yet :D

aslo weighed the crossmember and it was 39KG - thats without springs hubs and wishbones :!:
