luke you could varify this point possibly the hub is a forged component and can be welded as long as it is quenched in oil as you do each recess to maintain as near as possible the grain structure and because the loading across the flange is uniform and thro 5 points it should be ok :?:

not sure about the quenching in oil bit :? i'll check it out tomorrow with the experts at work, didnt have time today- too busy :D

the law states that any components used on a vehicles steering and suspension cannot be made from cast iron as in the case of an accident cast iron will not hold together and flex it will just snap causing loss of steering etc :!:

steering knucles on novas are most certainly cast iron, same setup is used on corsas too

as are renault clio ones

and ive seen clio one shattered after a hard collision with a kerb

anyway back to the original point:

if you positioned the stud im middle of the recess, it'd be no different to the stud being mounted thru the normal part of the hub, as they're both about the same thickness, and theres no real side loading on the studs anyway so the part going thru the unsuppored area is irrelevant and would just be like fitting a spacer to a normal alloy?

More likely cast steel.

do you mean fit the stud behind the recess leaving the recess there or filling it with weld :?:

Instead of drilling/machining for wheel studs/nuts why cant the hub be drilled and tapped for wheel bolts?

How thick is the hub in the recessed area, woud it be thick enough to drill/tap?

problem with that is there is nothing supporting the bit which holds the stud- also the studs could bend :(

thats not a bad idea :idea: - but there is a rule of thumb saying the length needs to be 1.5 times the thickness - not sure what it is i'd have to look it up - but mabe this is possable :D i'd prefer the pukka studs tho :)
and rather than wheel bolts it would be better with the wheel bolt stud conversions :D

the 'unsuppored' length is no different to the section of stud that would pass thru a wheel spacer for example

the only issue i can see is the stud could break thru the side of the recess on machining it which would obviously seriously weaken it.

i still think using the brake disk holes is a viable option, can u possibly measure their exact pcd? im thinking its either 100 or 101.6mm with 10mm drilling

going from 112 to 100mm is at most only 6% more load on the stud which really is bugger all... if wheels a tight fit on the center spigot there probably isn't going to be any difference whatsoever...

yep thats true :!: but i wouldn't fit a wheel spacer either :lol: the stud is subjected to bending forces aswell, without it it's only in shear and tension :)
