The van is just going to be for fun on the road (and maybe a trip or two to Santa Pod) and camping. I want to keep it looking fairly stock but kinda mean looking (matt black, tinted windows, bullbars, side bars and rear light guards). I'm working on a Photoshop pic now.

The interior will be 4 captains chairs and carpet throughout... I want to keep it as light as possible so no stove etc.

if you go with an auto box remember to change the diff for the (never get this right ) is it lowest or highest ratio any way the one nearest to 4:1 or better still some thing in a 3.?:1 or you will have a van that does 70 mph flat out and 6 mpg

i thought of putting a jag V12 in frankensprinter , only needed 2 boxes 9X6X2 welded in where the firewall meets the floor/ engine bulge
with the 1;1 top gear and 3.7:1 diff in the sprinter i would get around 112 top end and 70 would be 3000 rpm

with a trannys lower ? diff esp the 5.14:1 that would be around 70 @ the 5000 red line and "oh my gawd" fuel consumption

btw do you know the stock Windsor 302 can put out as little as 122 bhp depending what one you get

V8 Windsor,, in a MK4/5 you will find the biggest problem you will face is the back 2 spark plugs are a major issue to change while motor is in the van.. so just check before you start!

Ever thought of planting in a 3.0L Nissan V6 twin turbo motor, lots more fun and loads better on fuel too plus pleanty of parts, bit of a fiddle hear and there cos of injection, just a thought.

The VG30DETT is as wide as a big block and cost $$$$$ for parts

I have decided to keep my Cortina after all so the Transit is going to have to wait.

I am however going to drop a 302 into that though so the info provided will be very useful! The Nissan idea sounds interesting but, as my "name" suggests, a V6 just won't cut it!

Thanks for all of your help and the warm welcome I received. I shall still be logging on to check on the progress of all the restorations and customs. I'm especially interested in Sundowner's project but that doesn't mean to say that all of the others aren't awesome!

It's a 1971 Mk3.. an XL so it has the single headlights and no vinyl roof.

I think I might even have to get some parts shipped over from Oz... Castlemaine Rodshop if I remember rightly.

Castlemaine Rod Shop does some prettygood parts. I used a CRS kit to fit Falcon discs and HQ calipers to our Transit.
Years ago we also bought a CRS kit to fit a Falcon 4.1 in a Landcruiser but never ended up fitting it as the Landcruiser died. Still have some of the bits around somewhere.

The engine that was in our Transit when we got it was a 3.3 Corty motor with a 3.5:1 diff which was a little underpowered, but when it got a 4.1 it flew up hills in top gear and cruised faster than the handling would safely let you.
I've got a 2.92:1 disc diff that I am going to fit soon so we will see what that is like, but with a V8 you would want at least 3.5:1 for half decent cruising.
Factory Tranists with the 5.14 diff are appalling. They do acellerate prettygood from 0-30 mph though

Ther are quite a few available to look at, not neccesarily your model of van, but others.
If you were to get to Avon Park raceway in Stratford when there is the right type of meeting on, there are a few vanners that regularly race, all decnt chaps and no problem to talk to.

Ashley has a Mk3(4?) with a blown small blck chev. He has removed a large chunk of the bulkhead, and fitted a removable panel. Very neat.

There's also a couple of mid mounted vans, Joe Dalton in his Thames with a 302, and chap called Wobbly Bob, who has a supercharged 468 Chrysler in a Bedford CF. His van is very well built, over 2 tons, and still does sub 12 seconds.

All in all, your project sounds great, but if it were me I would get all the bits together, then fit in one go. You may need a 9" axle for the correct ratio.
