Retro fit Aircon - Any Ideas

When i put the rover engine in my escort i scrapped all the aircon bits, it doesnt look too dificult to fit, eventually i'll be putting a scorpio engine in my transit, im not a fan of aircon so ill not be bothering with fitting that either!!
is your a petrol or diesel tricky?

a simple answer to this one. I ran around in an old bedford midi for a while which was an ex-butcher's van, insulated complete with an engine driven compressor to run the roof-mounted fridge motor. I ripped all the insulation out to use it as a van but kept the fridge motor on the roof- you could get it down to -5 inside.
old insulated chiller transits crop up quite regularly, on ebay and also in scrappers. they tend to have short,very hard working lives, plus the floor rots out quite merrily from the constant freeze/thaw condensation-thus they are very cheap. just take all the fridge gear off and fit to your own vehicle. overkill maybe, but you wont be bothered by hot days again...

funnily enough it made hardly any difference. there is a pump for the refridgerant mounted on an extra pulley under the bonnet, this has an electromagnetic clutch to reduce drag when switched off, like any air con unit.

I hate air cons with a passion, thuogh they are ok on a very long hot journey, I prefer a sunroof if at all possible

wifes got an early tourino,just in process of fitting it with a cheap cobbled air con,heres what were doing ,it probly the long way round but,1.rob a used system from a old 760 top end volvo make sure you get the thermocouple sencer from inside aswell as controls. 2.try to get a treble belt crank pulley....refridgeration vans /ice crean van owt like that have one,it fits the unit to drive extra pump opposite side to powersteering unit also volvo pump just needs holes elongating on trany braket for moor adjustmnt/tention, 3.any industrial plant hose co ill make up hoses dont ask in the office ,see the lads in workshop they made up ours with the old ends and new pipe and i gave the lads in yard 30 quid, 4,go to heating engineering company pleade insanity.poverty or deminished priority and get it re gased......threres a sh*t hot firm in greasborugh,rotherham,home of many transit nutters like me who do it for a drink when the boss gone home....if you need phone nos i should beable todig em out...but from experence if you want to keep the kids happy when in spain in ya bus 60 quid from argos d v d portable sound up n windows open worked all the way to gibralta

how easy is it to fit a sunroof in a MK5? leccy one from an old beemer would be cool as tilts or fully opens!!!

Firstly, a mate of mine has an audi A5, and he said he won't be using his aircon again after he was cruising at 50mph, turned it on and the mpg went from 35 to 30! 5mpg is a lot to loose (or around 15%). Although I have to say I would still really like aircon.
Secondly - I love the idea of an electric sunroof on the transit. I toyed with this years ago - the problem is the corrugations on the roof metal - that's why the after market glass ones always end up leaking - the fitters put a lot of mastic in the gaps which eventually shrinks. I thought it might be possible to get a sunroof from the breakers cut out with some of the existing flat roof metal still around it, it could then be welded in place perhaps after sort of crimping flat the surrounding transit roof ridges a bit - still pretty tricky but there's prolly one or two of you that could do it. Anyway it would be a brilliant project and I'd love to see someone take up the challenge.

could mount bmw one up under roof, fit runners and gear, then use plasma cutter to cut new hole in orig shape, attach ford roof to bmw may only need trimming and rubber seals?? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

When the clutch on that aircon pump kicks in it WILL take off at least 4 mpg's. There are a lot of different hoses, routing and bits and it's impossible to remove the aircon from a MK5 complete without damaging at least one pipe as they are crimped and aren't designed to be removed. Also you'll need the heater control and bits and the fan shroud and fans that sit behiond the rad and the condensor. So you'll be looking at getting a new pipe fitting on top of a few recharge fees, as it will probably leak at first. Also doing anythiung to a MK5 with aircon is a nightmare as the pipes run all over the place in front of, under and over the engine. Forget taking the lump out in half an hour, it will take you a day to try and pin back the pipes, even then you'll probably still pince one.

Other than that I think you're on to a good idea at the right time, just like Luke was buying his snow chains in the middle of summer.

NB: Never buy a leafblower in Autumn!
