no progress yet :(

been rushed off my feet at work.... started at 7am this morning and only just got home (10pm) :(

have been thinking about it a lot tho.... the bmw has a smiler fly by wire accelerator so that should be an easy swap, and it only has a small/simple ecu which just controls the basics, so thats all good

the bit I'm worried about is the gearbox.... the gearstick on the bmw goes into the back of the hearbox... and it's a pretty long box... so I don't think that box would be any good ? I thought about an auto box (as suggested above) but I'm struggling to find out how many gears the bmw auto-box has...getting on for 15 years old now so might only have 4 ? (no idea to be honest....) but I think 4 would be a bit slow for a fully loaded transit...

other option would be to try and make an adaptor plate to either mate the transit box to the bmw engine.... or the transit box to the bmw bell-housing ?

the gearbox is the real sticking point for me... I don't want to buy a dona car and end up stuck...

I've had a good look at the bmw engine and the transit engine bay and it should fit pretty easily tbh... will have to dump the viscus fan on the front of the bmw engine and move the transit radiator forwards with an electric fan... but thats no biggie...

like you said... the bmw 6 cylinder engine is a really nice one... and though too.... when I had mine my brother used to have to drive to London and back (from Sunderland) in the same night for work 3 or 4 times a week.... he used to take my bmw and he'd do 130-140mph all the way there and back.... the car just laughed at us! I killed a couple of fiestas and a volvo because they didn't like going flat out for long motorway miles...

I dont think the BMW engine has any particular vices. I know the petrol ones you have to watch the water pump. and a common mod on the diesel was to connect the air con pin on the ecu so it thinks its turned on bringing the tickover up slightly as the engine had a habit of stalling on full lock.
One idea for the gearbox is to have a remote linkage. mount your current lever on the floor with a spherical bearing. then run a rod back to the BMW lever. as there are no levers to lift for reverce just a stiff detent spring

I was thinking about some kind of remote linkage... the problem I had is I can't picture it in my head and know how easy it will be without having a look at a bm gearbox....

this is the best i can find

quite a few here too....

looks easier than I imagined...the top bar just holds the gear leaver in the right spot compared to the gearbox

the bottom leaver does all the work... forwads and backwars is easy to do.... side to side is a bit harder...

it's hard to see how the side to side of the gear leaver translates into the twisting of the bit that goes into the gearbox...
