I can order today and I know of a little engineering place a couple of miles away.
I'm still puzzled - surely by the time the heads of the bolts are sitting in their counter bores there can't be much metal left between them and the other side of the hub?
Anyway I'll follow your good advice and do them!
Just a question of whether to drive to the engineeering works, then take the hubs off and wait, or leave the van jacked up here in the street and walk along with the hubs

yes they are spot on - dunno how i missed them i checked on ebay 2 lots you need

theres loads of metal to start with the reason there is is because they need to be thick to clear the calipers - trust me ive done this loads of times

Just a question of wheather to drive to the engineeering works, then take the hubs off and wait, or leave the van jacked up here in the street and walk along with the hubs

either - just make sure when they drill them you get no swarf inside where the bearings are - 1 little bit and it'll knacker the bearings in no time

i usually fully wash out the inside with a degreaser to make sure (then regrease) but if you cant do that stuff some rags inside and put the bearing cap on the top make sure the guy doing it realises you dont want swarf inside then he can keep it down when he's drilling them

Just buzz a bit off the wheels, doesn't look like it needs much to clear those bolts, even less if you swap 'em out for allen bolts!

Hmm...my first thoughts were to just buzz the offending bits off, but have decided to go the recommended way.

Luke - could you tell me the nut size for the large nut on the hub? Not sure if I have a big enough spanner.
In the meantime...received a ticket for a no left turn when I was en rout to get the wheels - so they have not worked out as cheap as I thought! Grrr
I checked out the little engineering works I remembered but it has gone so currently trying to find another...or someone with a pillar drill as I did find this...

I got the bolts today - wow that was quick - but I lost one out of my pocket on the way to show the machine shop...still got eleven though

If anyone fancies helping out nows the time to shout! There are some £'s available!

those are the correct ebay bit's - cheep too i paid a fair bit more for mine

not sure on the hub nut size - ive got 24mm in my head but cant be sure rememebr 1 is left hand thread

I took the wheel off again and had a look to make sure I have what I need - got a spanner for the hub nut no prob there, it wasn't that big. Just ordered a couple new wrenches (all mine are falling to bits) and extension bars so I can get at the caliper nuts ok.
See what you mean about the thickness of the hub metal now - looking at how far the bolts have to go I wonder if 35mm might have been better?

The existing nuts seem to go to exactly the middle of the disc whereas the new ones will be a little shorter.
Anyway...thinking of buying a pillar drill, will a typical small one like this...

or Wickes/Screwfix equivalent be up to the job? Hope so...I rather fancy one

30mm's spot on you measure a caphead from the bottom of the head - you dont want too much thread sticking out as they will be a pain to undo when they rust up a bit

dont you know anyone with a pillar drill anyone on here in your area if you've got the bit your nearly there

There's no thread sticking out from the existing bolts, they don't go all the way through the holes in the disc. They stop short at about half way through the actual disc profile. I just ordered the counter bore bit. Went for the 17£ one, it looked to have a wider end to keep it in the hole as I drill. So yeh, kind of nearly there.
No I can't find anyone with a pillar drill. I wonder if I could use hand held? Would the bit likey bust? Dunno what they are like to work with. Maybe drilling with the hubs still on, that way they won't go anywhere? (If I lock the disc).
Should I get some sort of cutting lube?

Also: how tight to do hub bearing nuts? My torque wrench seemed only to go down to 20lb or something so after experimenting the other day I had to guess it - sort of just tight?

for just 1 job you'll be ok with the cheep one

might work hand held but it wont be easy you need a slow speed and they take more pushing down than normal drills

the bearing nut - dont do it to a torque, just tighten it up as much as you can till the wheel stops spinning then back it off untill the wheel spins free! then put the split pin through

Thanks for that - I prolly didn't re-fit it tight enough after my trial run the other week.
I'm not getting on at all at the moment - the counterbore came, but I need to win a pillar drill from ebay before I can continue!

Well I picked up a smart little pillar drill off ebay last nite - so I am ready to go now. Couple more dumb questions though, if I may...
What speed will be best for the drill bit?
Do I need to use some sort of cutting lube?
Hoping to have a crack at it this weekend.
