Re-drilling mk3/4/5 front hubs

going from 112 to 100mm is at most only 6% more load on the stud which really is bugger all... if wheels a tight fit on the center spigot there probably isn't going to be any difference whatsoever...

yeah thats not my main concern and that is true the centre spigot is very important - it would be good to be able to do destructive tests on these to see how much they can actually take

right spoke to one of the metalurgists today at work - he had a look at the hub and he says its not forged - its cast

we did a hardness test and it wouldnt even regester on our rockwell tester - so it is below 20 rockwell C - very soft this means it has been cast and normalised, and had no hardening treatment!

so in his opinion the recesses could be welded up it would then require a normailisng treatment for example 850x1 degrees for 1 hour then slow cooled in a protective atmosphere! then the machined flat and drilled

aslo in his opinion it wounldnt distort in either the welding or the normalising!!!

in your opinion is there enough meat to allow my pcd of 108 as i'm begining to think of changing to a 120 pcd bmw to you and me as there are plenty of wheels 4 sale checked e bay and confirmed this would help with the location of rear studs as well and my engineering shop confirmed to the same cast not forged although he did say he could quote 4 a front hub machined from fresh what that will b i don't know

tbh steve - if your prepared to go BMW i think i would - it was my 1st choice - loads of wheels available and in lots of different offests but i just saw these merc wheels and thought i gotta have em

you could always sell your wheels/ adapters as a set to someone who is prepaired to fit arches

i'd be very interested in the price your m/c shop quotes for new hubs - just to compair - at the moment i'm putting all my effort into getting the rest of my van done the front hubs are taking a back seat

120 will definatly go on the back - as my 112 is done (but thats another thread)

one good thing with going 112 or bigger is that any problems you may encounter like MOT man police etc. is you can say "its stronger than a vito's" (which is 112) at the end of the day who are they to argue with that? the calculations to work out whats strong enough are that complecated that they wont be able to prove you wrong

I you fancy winding a up vw owners off you could go for 130 pcd porsche rims, as they should be strong enouh to with stand the forces as they can handle the power and speed of a porsche which aint the lightest of motors

My van runs the same pcd as transit connect of 114.3

done it today - 5 x 100mm this was on a mk4 hub!!

so it wasnt 4" as i 1st thought just shows you cant beat a bit of accurate measuring

theres plenty of 5 x 100 wheels about audi have them so keep us updated on this - i'm very interested to see how you get on

as i said in the previous post i'm looking at putting disk over the front of the hub like most normal cars, so i'll need to machine the hub o/d down to match inside of the disk, find some suitable disks and knock up some caliper to hub brackets

and then hope it'll be ok regarding stress/strain

the way i look at it tho, subaru ran it on impreza until this year, and the scooby rally cars seem to be just fine getting thrown around rally/race stages!
