As people may have read on another thread, I now have a set on 15" modulars. Im thinking of getting hub adaptors made up to fit them as the pcd is different. Im a little worried the wheels may be out past the arches though. Im assuming hub adaptors can be made to 40mm wide or there abouts?? Does anyone know what wheel offset one can get away with to keep the wheels under the standard arches (Standard MK 2) using wheel adaptors? Im planning on using adaptors on the front aswell as rear. Are there any other concerns I should consider?

Cheers...

your fronts will redrill easy - mk1/2 disk hubs are totally flat :D - the rears might redrill too with it being 140 pcd - i can have a measure of mine to check but so long as the studs are through the brake drums you will be ok :D
but if you do go for adapters i have a drawing (posted on here) and i would be able to mod it for you if you wish - i think they are 25mm thick :)

Thanks Luke,
I was thinking of useing adaptors (front and rear) for 3 reasons really, firstly because its the easy option, secondly so it can be put back origional and thirdly so i dont have to source a spare incase of a flat, I'd just be able to take the adaptor off and use a standard wheel to get me home, over all diameter is the same. But im a bit nervous of the wheels sticking out past the arches hence wondering if anyone has worked out a maximum allowable wheel offset, front and rear. Would be interested to know if I could do it via re drilling rear as well though...

Does anyone know what 140 x 5 pcd is from? Is it Jap SJs or Dihatsu maybe??

i think 140 is actually 139.summat and its jap suzuki sj etc. :D

if you redrill the fronts you could still fit origanals - ok you'd need to carry a set of studs but its no more difficult than removing the adapters :D

if you measure the wheel from the outer rim to the mounting face i'll work the ET out for you and tell you if it fits :D
but with out a doubt i'd redrill the fronts its a much safer, cheeper and better in every way - fair enough for the later vans its a more involved job but to me on a mk1/2 its a no brainer :D

have a look at my thread in tech how too's on redrilling and adapters :D
[i'll edit link in later]

Yeah 139.9 I think.

Hmm could do, Ive not really had a good look at whats involved yet, I'll take a look through your threads and maybe take a wheel off this next day or two. Why do you say redrilling is much safer? Just because of the extra strain on bearings and mechanics?

The prob i have at the moment is its unpractical to have it parked up off the raod whilst a redrilling takes place, hence thinking adaptors may be the easiest way...

Thanks very much, I'll take a measurement tomorrow. ET??

One other thing, let me get this straight then, you'd recommend redrill front and adaptors for back? If i took this approach, are there any implications to having rear wheels slightly spaced out when the fronts arent, or does it not matter as it would be so marginal?

yes thats it :D and no it doesnt matter that the rear is wider - mk4/5s are like that out of the factory :D

i take your point about it being easier i can see where your coming from but if you can arrange with a machine shop to have them done at a certain time they could have em done in a day easily :D

worth it imo keeps the steering geometry nearer to standard problem with altering the front too much is it makes the steering heavy and can some times affect it that much it will tramline and not centre properly :( with the wheels you have you will be altering the geometry but fitting adapters makes it worse :D

Hmm, Thanks Luke am considering redrill again now!

Ive just had a measure and from the mounting face of the wheel to the outside of the wheel the measurement is just under 115mm. What d'ya recon, under the arches ok??

Luke, I just had a thought regarding redrilling the front hubs. If i'm changing to a 140 (139.9) pcd, I havent drawn it out but wouldnt my new stud holes be v.close to the origional stud holes? Possibly too close?? If this is an issue would it be suitable instead of redrilling in line with the old stud holes to rotate 72 degrees and have new stud holes drilled in line with mounting holes, or maybe redrill somewhere between the both??

yeah you'd be able to stagger it to get the pcd in :D

115mm :?: :?: :?: are you sure :?: thats wide  and i take it this is without any tyres on :?:

from memory the mk2 has 95mm under the arches and ive just measured my transit wellers and they are 85mm from mounting face to rim edge (not including the tyre) :D

what width are your wheels :?:

The wheels do have tyres on, 205 /65 /15 . I placed a straight edge across the tyre drirctly across the middle of the wheel and measured from the mounting face to the bottom of the straight edge, the measurement was 115mm They are fairly deep dished wheels i suppose, the measurement would be a bit less without tyres on.

right ok ........... they are wide :D
i'll look up my measurements for the mk2 but i think your gonna find they stick out a bit, certanly forget adapters for the front - the rear has i think 10-15mm more clearance so even with adapters they will the same :)

depends how you feel about running tyres like that theres been some discussion on here about whats legal and not - but it seems that so long as the tread patten is under the arch thats ok :!:
you will always be able to loose 5mm by fitting 195's when the 205s wear out :D

any chance of posting a pic of these wheels :?:

I thought the rears had a bit mor clearance :)

So if redrilling the front, can i knock out the studs and slide them into the old holes without taking the hub back off (incase i need to put standard spare on in emergancy) or will the hub have to come off again? I havent had a measurement of the hub yet, but is there any risk that it will be too big a diameter for me to fit my new wheel on without milling the hub diameter down? Im aware i'll see hub through the wheels if i dont mill them down, but as i mentioned i want to be able to put it back to standard and dont have a spare at the new pcd.

The 95mm under the arches you mentioned is on the front then? So you recon the wheels would be out past the arches by 20mm??

How do I go about posting a pic on here?

yeah the rears i think have more clearnace but the adapters eat this up :|
and yeah i think that they will be out buy around that :? the best thing to do is try them against it to see for sure :?

you should be ok without reducing the dia of the fronts - again from memory you cant get the studs out on the mk2 hubs without removing the disks as they are too close (mk3-> you can as they are wider) they way i measured mine was bolted 2 40mm box sections to the hub then offerec the wheel up measured the amount it stuck out then took 40mm off :D

look at the 1st topic in the gallery there is pic posting instructions there :D you need to do this as once they are on the van we need to see
