Sorry for delay.
Van is still sat in the garden, untouched and unmoved, been using the car for work.
Still deciding what to do with the van, struggling with finding a diff, (had 3 lined up and all fell through) may have to travel to mainland for new or repair etc and its all more cost, haven`t took diff out yet in case I decide to sell it and so its still moveable (onto a trailer),

so don`t know what I`m doing at the minute.

I will have another rummage around tomorrow and see what I can find.

I've said I have a later diff you can have - but you would have to swap the centers over (assuming yours is ok) which is a bit fiddly but not hard

selling up is a bit extreme lee, got a noisey mk3 diff here, maybe get new bearings fitted and just swop it over

Hmmmm ... well after a great christmas / new year away in the motorhome in Polperro Cornwall, come back refreshed and decided to attack the van

van ready for diff removal:







Finally removed diff, can`t see alot wrong, but not sure what I am looking for:









Does look like there is some where on the cogs bottom edge:







Any advice on what I should be looking for?

it does look like there is some wear/damage on the crownwheel, looks like its got some rust on it too, can you see if the pinion has any damage, if you grab the diff flange and turn it, how much play before it starts turning the crownwheel ?

Think I have found the problem, following your advice I turned the diff flange and crownwheel moves instantly, turned diff upside down and looked in whilst turning the pinion flange and found the problem.... pinion has lost / sheared some of its cog bit where it engages with crownwheel:

jesus lee, the technical term for that is its fooked least you found the problem
all I can say is my diff here is in better condition than that one

was driving with it like this, no more than 30mph at the end, but the noise became so loud, it had to be parked up

yep thats the problem mine had no teeth leth when i finnished it was just spinning

tis the reason why my v6 transit has an atlas axle up its arse

What are my best options then?
Replace crown-wheel and pinion for new and find someone to install the crown-wheel and pinion into the diff housing for me,
Keep looking for a 2nd hand diff,
Or install an Atlas Axle?

Was the Atlas Axle from a capri and if so what mods are required, is the axle wider than the mk2 mk3 narrower transit axle (if yes my wheels won`t fit), etc, etc..

hi lee its a proper transit axle, bolt it straight on, rare as rocking horse poop but i know a man who has one
