Just been catching up on your thread Lee, glad to hear you kept at it and look forward to seeing you again this year. Must start thinking about a rebuild on my diff that browny fitted, im getting a slight noise at certain speeds, im the only one who seems to notice it. How much did it cost for your refurb.

Hi Alan.

Refurbed diff cost £220 + vat (£264.00). That`s an out right purchase, no exchange for old unit, etc. so I have my old diff which I can now strip down and practice re-assembling it.
Might be cheaper if you take your diff in to be re-furbed :D

Van is going well however do have a slight issue.
Starts first time, ticks over lovely, accelerates nice and smooth (and rapid), however sometimes when accelerating and you dip clutch to change up a gear the engine backfires (sometimes) but only as you dip the clutch and the engine speed starts to drop, and when de-accelerating whilst in gear the engine is slightly hesitant / lumpy/ so you feel slight jerkiness through the van, like the engines fighting / resisting
I have fitted an electronic ignition kit to replace the points / condensor.
Set timing using a strobe light (however can only point the strobe lamp from the top of engine looking down as alternator and pulleys are in the way to get gun any closer).
Still have the pinto single exhaust pipe from the mid-section back.
So could it be a timing issue, running rich or the narrow exhaust pipes or a combination of all 3.
Will be getting twin exhausts made soon.

Hmmm.. my thoughts with the backfire is either to much fuel (running rich) or timing out causing the a late firing time, which might cause the slight de accelerating judder.

Found this in a thread on Rods and Sods forum in answer to someone else`s question of poor V6 running:

"Webers should work fine with that pressure , V6s don't like running too lean and timing is also critical . Has it backfired at all since starting ( usually due to too weak/timing as mentioned ) as this can blow the power valve meaning you are tuning out a rich idle which means mixture problems further up.
How far did you have to screw the idle screws out ?"

So maybe the backfire issue is due to a weak mixture / timing issue :?:

i'll go with weak/lean mixture, i run mine on the rich side otherwise it's a pig as you describe eg. jerks/hesitant flat spots, then me mate leans it every year at mot time and then i set it richer again, mentalist even poisons the planet driving one of those disgusting diesel contraptions. petrol is crap stuff these days which don't help  8)
my exhaust consists of a length of flexi from the downpipe balljoint coupler which was off a austin maxi or summat straight into a gary boy twin outlet box pointing out ahead of the offside wheels.
i also have pink hair.flamingo pink it's called.done me eyebrows too.
