hmmmm :D now does the 4mm matter :?: only 2mm either side   could the btm pivot be modded mabe :?

would be good to try some transit shoes inside a vw drum to see if they would bed in ok :? could do with a trip to the motorfactors

ive just checked my haynes manual it says for my axle the drums are 254.0mm so it wouldnt work would it?

now would that be inside diameter as the drums on ebay say its 280mm

according to ebay  mk4 tranist 5 stud is 254mm i.d x 90 high. drums are usually sized in inches just like wheels, so that is an 10" drum, and the 270mm vw one is probably 270 o.d. making it an 10" drum also. so they may well fit.

the killer will be the weather seal to the backplate though :!:

might be possible to fit t4 backplates and run complete t4 rear brakes, should be easy to re-drill (and if necessary space out) the backplates :!:

right haynes maunal says and i quote
front discs 254 or 270 mm according to model

drums pre 92
h axle 228.6mm
g axle 254.0mm

drums 1992 models onwards
h axle 254.0mm
g axle 280.0mm

mine is a 96 but ive measured inside diameter and im sure its about 274mm and the shoes are about 56-58 mm some where round there

you might find the transits in inches and the vw's metric :? mabe the back plate could be made/adapted - fitting the full vw set is a good idea but the transits got a very large centre and i can bet the vw being fwd doesnt have that :(

bet they are imperial, even on modern fords and japanses cars with metric bolts the brakes all have imperial threads in the fittings and imperial bore sizes in the cylinders. even the motorbikes do!

as for the backplates, if it isnt big enough just cut the middle out and weld a bit in, you only need the rim and the pivot and lug points. in any case its got to be worth a look.

Interesting thread guys, would be good to see a vw conversion done, think its easier to do it what Luke suggested though:

Luke wrote:on your hubs if they are circular - unlike my mk1 ones why not drill and tap 5 new holes at 160 pcd and put some studs in - that way they wont go through because of the shank of the stud and wont come out because of the wheel  perfectly safe :D

I think Welding the old cut off studs in from the back would be satisfactory too though.

To overcome the unsupported length between the half shaft face and the wheel you could make a disc to fit in the recess of the drum, the right thickness to bring flush with the outside of the drum, with 5 holes for the new studs. That way the wheel would tighten up nicely and not strain studs.

Luke wrote:i'm also a bit unsure of the unsupported length between the half shaft face and the wheel :? you could get the studs bending due to that section :?

how does it drive :?: they look to be a little off centre but mabe its the camera angle :D

it's a shame they wern't 140's you could have probly got that throughthe drum :D

140 pcd would be through the drum I think yeah Luke but theres problems with drilling 140 pcd in the hubs as discussed in my wheel change thread
http://www.fordtransit.org/forum/viewto ... 7&start=75
I am assuming hub to be same as a mk2 though...

Luke wrote:well i cant understand a word of it  but looking at the pics this imo is how adapters should be - having the centre boss to support the new wheel :D if they do fit VW wheels then the boss will be 57mm and req an adapter ring if you were to fit mercedes wheels which have a 66mm centre bore :D
