bit more progress today :D

Ive removed all the beam axle and leaf springs of the van, ive also fitted the ifs front - in hindsight it might have been easier to use a mk3 the front holes are the same size as the mk1 20mm i think and the mk4 is 12mm - i think i will make some top hat shaped spacers to fit in the chassis hangers to reduce the holes to 12mm then weld them in :D

unfortunatly the bump stops are in the way now so ive got to remove them - not a problem but once i do that it's more difficult to go back

i also tried to fit my mk1 hubs to the mk4 discs and stub axle, the idea of this is to narrow the front track - which it will if it all fits as the mk1/2 hubs are narrower

unfortunatly the inner bearing is different, the outer is the same i think, also looking at it the mk3 one looks the same as the mk1/2 so again easier if i did a mk3 conversion, i may have to swap it to mk3 if i cant sort this but im gonna try get a bearing with the inner race the same as mk4 and the outer race the same as the mk1/2 if i can.

the reason i chose mk4 over mk3 is the mk4 has vented disks and better calipers, but does anyone know .............................

if mk4 disks/calipers can be fitted to mk3 or mk3 stub axle fitted to mk4 :?:
i prefer the mk4 shocker top mount and i'd like to keep that but can mk4 shockers fit mk3 or can mk3 shockers fit mk4 top mounts :?:

unfortunatly it doesnt (at the moment) but good know as i might end up fitting 4 pots off the twin wheeler :D

This pic shows how i welded up the axle to keep the alignment perfect

the cling film was just to stop the threads going rusty as i kept it outside for a while :D

ive now cut the centre out of the box section - so each arch is a separate piece - before i cut it i measured the length 1496mm (just incase i forget  ) and when there both in place i will line them up with a length of angle and hopefully the measurement will be the same

ive also found a bit of rust in the mk4 arches so im gonna do that before it goes in the van :D and after ligning them up in the van i think it will be easyer with just the arch panel so im also cutting them back so its just the arch panel left :D

im aslo stuck on the drop arm - cant get the damn thing off :x so i'm gonna make a puller to get it off, usefull for future if it works

quality mate 8) looks much stronger than the snapon one i have, the thread on the snapon is really fine and my man ripped the first ones thread out when he tried pulling off the drop arm without removing the nut first  still lucky it was snapon as he replaced it no problem

Toady i fitted the mk4 column. I ground off the part where it bolts to the mk4's bulkhead, and took the top mounting off the old column :D

Looking at it the next job is to remove the mk1 shocker mount, so it's no turning back time :( but ive got my heart set on it so thats it

the only thing is i tried a wheel on today and they seem to sit forward in the arch by about 1-2" i remember this from the last one i did but for this one i really want the wheel perfect - so i think i'm gonna redrill the front mountings as far back in the panel as i can - also this will get rid if the problem i have with the mk4 bolts being smaller than the mk1/2/3 ones :D

im using the front pick up points (at the moment) - i guess thats where the extra 1½" on the mk3's wheelbase over the mk1/2 is  i will redrill the front hangers to get it further back, the last one i did i just left it like that but for some reason it didnt look as bad with the mk1 wings :D
