Different Engines in Transits?

Postby 9000Parts » Sun Feb 26, 2012 9:02 pm

As ive been 'given' a Mk6 Transit Im wondering what silly things I could do to it.

Has anybody ever stuck a SAAB B2x4 Turbo in a Van before? Omega gearbox for RWD as seen in a couple of BMWs or there are a few GM boxes suitable too.

Silly or Sensible?

How much do you want?

A 2.0LPT is 150BHP but a simple ECU remap which you can do yourself for £100 worth of bits and a bit of free software this can be taken to 220BHP without changing anything at all. Failing that, a few beer tokens to a friend

The B234R is the Aero variant with a bigger Mitsubishi TD04 instead of a T25 and that runs 220BHP. Easily mapped for 270BHP without changing anything.

These engines will take 400BHP without messing with the oily bits in the middle, just a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger pump and a couple of other little bits. Can be done for £1000 on a good day!

If I could fabricate stuff and weld it might turn out alright. I suspect a Transit would be a good place to stick one of these engines. They are so tall its a challenge to get them in a lot of cars. Quite a few Astras and Vectras got them fitted now but its a squeeze.

When I get the Mk6 back to the UK in the next couple of weeks I will size up the engine bay and see what it looks like. Wondering if it would be easy enough to bolt the whole 9000 subframe up to the van? Anybody got any good pictures from underneath a Mk6 FWD?

The 9000 has the engine fitted in such a way that it tilts forward about 20 degrees.

Have only had a quick look at this so far but the engine and box will definately fit so it looks like it would be easier to just attach the entire SAAB subframe to the Transit and use the Transit springs and dampers attached to the lower arms from the SAAB subframe.

There is a very good reason for using the whole subframe, I would keep the SAAB ECU and the real headache everybody has is the speed signal. Keeping the SAAB box (despite it being made of tinfoil and chocolate) will solve that problem and im sure a SAAB instrument cluster can be FMBed into the dash too.

Cant do anything until later this year now though, the van is going to be taking another trip to Turkey and I dont want to be troubleshooting it all the way there ad back.

Pics of other peoples attempts at engine swaps will be welcome, the weather has been too miserable to actually get underneath with a tape measure so far.

They are or were owned by gm, they should of been a vectra with a different jacket but Saab changed so much that they are not mucb like a vauxhall that we know. The main block is the same though in the 4pot and v6 engine.
