Xenon convert

Postby AlanN » Mon Feb 05, 2007 1:15 am

Ive brought new headlights for my MK3 from ebay recently to replace the yellowing ones fitted, dam they are easy to change, but to go along with them, I have been looking at Xenon bulb kits.
I didnt want to spend too much money on hype, so I had a good read through, blarb, blarb, blarb and settled on a cheaper priced set from the link below. Fitted one headlight, Xenon H4 & 501 bulbs tonight, Wow! what a differance, I'd recommmend a set to anyone, much better illumination and look pretty cool too. 8)

I hate it when we are diving and the car coming the oposite way has bright lights, it wakes the little one with a big load of tears :(

Why do we insist on blinding each other? Or do i just notice it more as we do a fair bit of rural driving so our eyes have a larger ajustment to make :o

Saying that... I was going to look into brighter lights as they would be useful!

They say that they are 30% brighter than standard bulbs, but I have found bulbs that are 50% brighter on ebay, that sounds like one in the eye 8)

I must admit that the headlamps themselves dont look that bright, just a little blueish. The white light just illuminates better and I can see the upper light line, like I can on my 06 astra, ahead of me, which has those clear round lenses.

I was thinking of changing my bulbs, but i think i should change my light units first as they are getting a bit pitted, so probably wouldnt bennifit from the upgrade yet. Also dont you have to be carefull putting higher watt bulbs in with the plastic headlamp lenses ????

Mark,

I know this have been covered in another thread but.....

I fitted Phillips Vision Plus bulbs to the Torneo as soon as I got it, had them on the previous bus and also use them on the bike and in my wife's car.

They give a real difference in visibility with no extra wattage and thus no problems with the plastic lenses.

I have also tried 'white' and 'blue' bulbs and found them both to be useless in really nasty weather.

I may try the philips xenon bulbs at a later date, but do they make a noticeable differance over the cheaper ones. Philips dont state what they are brighter than!!! My 1966 cortina GT maybe!
The only thing I have found in their favour is a report from auto express

"This is the best +50% bulb here.. Key to its success was its super bright output - the most powerful tested. In the light tunnel, the difference could be seen with the naked eye."
Cheapest I have found on ebay £11.99 + £1.75 P+P a pair, not bad I think.

As I mentioned in the first post, I have also fitted 2 new headlights, one was one £3 + £5.50 P+P on ebay, bargins all round... :D

I still want some clear back lamps if anyone knows of any in stock somewhere

Alan,

Its all a personal opinion of course, but I have tried Halfords 50% brighter.... oh really? They were brighter than stock, but not as good as the Phillips.

When I first bought the Transit I was amazed just how poor the lights were. I had used the Phillips bulbs on my bike as we did a lot of night riding and the difference was phenomenal (and the Pan European's lights are good as standard, must be something to do with the reflectors) so I thought I'd stick em in the bus just to see.

Off to bed now, got my PCV Theory Test in the morning!!

Theres loads of of them on ebay, so, i think i will give them a bash. Going to try the cheap one for a couple of weeks to get used to them then change over...

Im tempted to get a pair of those philips bulbs, but i find that i hardly use my main beams at all these days.

when i lived in hampshire, i used tham all the time round the back roads and the first thing i did with a new car was upgrade the lights.

the worst lights i had were on my chevette- with the rear demister on, they lit up like a sick glow worm

They do xenon bulbs for spots, fogs, side and even repeater light bulbs.
I have just been looking at those quad lamp kits so I may have to buy spot bulbs too...
