putting a small light unit in mine its a renault 21savanna light console which has 3 lights on it.have done a simalar thing in a lorry before I made it out of MDF wood and covered it in cloth trim looked ok sorry no pics sold lorry 2 years ago.but i fixed it to the supports behind rooflining when made up i fittted window shades to it very good idea as long as it does not intrude to much into view out of window(ministry dont like it)make templates out of card first to get design you like and stick it in place with tape when you get something you like transfer it to the wood or metal.

you know what comes to mind thinking of this ?

depends on what mk of van of course, but i have seen storage compartments for mk3/4 hightop vans that fit in that section (ebay) ... so, with a little bit of cutting you could have i nicely fitting lower section to the console, only requiring you to fabricate the back section

luke the one in my van is maid of fiberglass which was a pig to fitt. i have maid many of them befor out of plywood . thay dont take long to make if you want one give me a call. i think wood is better and easyer to work with and if you want to cover it the fabric sticks better

ive made a few roof consols for my mk2's, only lwb's though.
I tend to make the basic shelf with wood and add bits of car dashboards for shaping like the lower center of a low range mk3 granada turned upside down:

looked quite good after it was covered with foam and vinyl plus it already had the radio apeture in it

if ya need dashboards let me know have a few of the buggers kicking about sierra granada pug feista etc etc
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.
