Mk5 rear light clusters

Postby Skippy » Wed Jun 20, 2007 1:46 pm

Hi there people! :D

We don't use foglights over in Perth at all so I took out my rear light clusters to see if I could wire the fog lights to come on with the foot brake for added safety & I thought it might look good. First of all I disconnected the switch & put a blank in place of it on the dash. With the light cluster apart I then bridged the circuit with solder for brake & fog sections. So when I apply the brake all 4 red sections light up! I must admit it certainly does look neat, & very visible! I bet someone has tried it before though! Makes a good little project & gives you a chance to get in some quality time with your beloved Transit! 8)

Have you uprated the wiring and the fuse?

I havn't changed any of the wiring or fuse! Didn't realise you had to. I done this 6 months ago now & no problems yet. The switch is still there, taped up behind dash. No other wiring at rear was touched. Let me know the problems encountered so I can rectify this & delete thread if neccessary. thanks mrmpuk

I must admit the wiring did look pretty beefy on the brake circuit. I thought it might handle the extra current ok?

Only really checking because the fog lamps will draw more current then the tail lights did and of course you now of 4 lamps on the same circuit. You may be fine but it should be checked.

I think its a 10 Amp fuse on that circuit (depending on model etc). 4 x 21W makes 84W and thats 7 Amps at 12V. So it should work ok but may blow a fuse if a bulb goes pop and causes a surge. TT

you could have done this much more easily and all under the dash by linking the switched live off the brake light circuit straight to the switched side of the fog lamp switch then the two circuits would still use their own wiring to the back of the van

sorry - I'll get me coat

High level (third) brake light Transits (MK5s at least anyway) use a 15 amp fuse and the same wiring loom :!:
Can't see a problem :? other than WE can't do what you've done, in the UK  :(

You can do this but extra fog light mounted on offside would have to be fitted I think because the vehicle has fogs fitted as standard.
