fitting minibus seats sideways

Postby squarepeg » Sun Aug 12, 2007 12:55 pm

here's an idea.... can u fit minibus seats down the sides of a van (so they face into the centre, not facing forwards)... is it possible to do? is it legal?

i know that it's legal to have bench seats down the sides (ie without seat belts) cos i've had two vans with that setup and even been stopped with it full of people and not had any trouble. it's a good setup cos you keep all the space in the van plus u get seats as well. but i'd rather have a setup where all my passengers wouldn't die in a crash! :\

hi
right that one you will have to look into .as far as im aware its now illegal
i used to run a couple of landworker gangs about 5 years ago and 2 of our vans had the bench seats down the sides but no seat belts and we were told that we could use them to the end of the year
and then we would have to take them out and fit proper minibus seats forward facing and seatbelts and the other 2 vans that had got them already we had to take the very back 2 seats out otherwise the driver had to sit another test i think for a psv but im not sure now something like that as it was changing and then that van became another class
it basically went in one ear and out the other as we were packing up at the end of the season anyway...

land rovers and range rovers have side mounted rear seats fine aslong as you put seat belts in and limos have them as well so its perfectly legal to put them that way if you so wish

I think you are right, check with your insurance company. I asked mine, they said seats had to be forward facing with belts or they wouldnt insure it
