modifying the atlas axle

Postby BROWNYS V6 » Sun Nov 18, 2018 11:19 pm

so I got this idea, dunno if it will work but here goes, ive just swopped out my atlas axle off my mk3, but eventually would like to reinstall it, stronger, better ratio's, but if you want to run a different pcd no bloody good. ive got another square tube axle, tried to sell it, no one wanted it, so sod it im gonna chop it up, plan is to remove the ends where the bearings/hubs attach and weld it onto my atlas axle so I can run square tube hubs and halfshafts, redrilled to my chosen pcd, obviously though I need to respline the shafts to fit my atlas diff, this is where it gets tricky, either chop the spline bit off, get the shafts resplined then narrow the axle to suit, or could I get a pair of mk5 shafts as they are a bit longer, get those resplined without having to narrow the axle.
does it make sense or am I talking bollocks :?:
does anyone know how much longer mk5 halfshafts are than a mk3 shaft
cheers
:)

It makes sense to me, where there is a will and all that, with a bit of research you can usually find some part from another vehicle out of the Ford parts bin to make projects work.

There is another useful link here too Paul,

cheers guys, been thinking about this mod for a while now, after spending ages looking for a better ratio for the square tube axle ive just put on the van, and not being able to find one, its a no brainer, good thing is all the new parts ive just bought and fitted to the square tube axle will swop over to the modded atlas, bar the shafts of course, got to get it done some how,
cheers

just to let u know, i'm planning on bringing a couple of transit mk8 american axles home with me (i'm working stateside), they are factory LSD, and 3.73 ration, i will be using 1 with a new 3.09 ration and aftermarket LSD, but the other is for test fits and maybe sell, i believe they are slightly wider than the mk6/7, so wider than the mk 3/4/5, the axle itself is the very strong Ford 9.75, and its fitted to lots of vehicles in the US, and the transit one keeps the 5x160 pcd, also working with someone else to change the pcd to 6x135 (same as f150 ford ) this opens up a world of new alloys that are weight rated way more than any transit should carry

Been and borrowed a mk4 shaft (cheers gav) to se if my crazy plan will work, first off i thought no but after a quick measure up i think it will, the longer shafts are waisted wberd i need to Re spline them, but the overral diameter iz bigger zo i think it could work out ok

would a P100 axle be a solution? They are an Atlas type, with floating hubs, and the Transit PCD. Not sure if they would be wide enough for a Transit though.

wow, 2 years since i touched this axle, too many projects an all that, been chopping the ends off yesterday and slicing up the mk3 ends to go on, need some engineering doing to tidy up the ends and also need to source a lump of tube to go between the 2 different size tubes.
will try to get some pics up, but dont hold ya breath

so im making some steady progress, had the axle ends tidied up by my engineer dude, he also re drilled the mk3 hubs to 5x120 pcd (bmw) engineer now has the shafts to skim the faces nice and flat and he is going to machine a slight groove so we can weld on a spigot ring for wheel location, still on the lookout for some thick wall(10mm) steel tube to get the ends to marry up with the smaller axle case
